I am so, so tired of hearing variations of the phrase, "Yeah, but that wouldn't work here because Milwaukee is SO different." That is this city's #1 go-to excuse, and it's a big reason why our problems seem so intractable.

Here's some facts: 1/3 of students in AD10 attend non-district schools. Next year, public charter students in AD10 will lose ~$1.3M due to unequal funding. Parental Choice Program students will lose ~$15.4M!
And that's just to the state average - the gap in MKE is even wider.

Today, the JFC voted 12-4 (on party lines) to advance a budget that absolutely fails to meet the needs of the people of Wisconsin. Tomorrow, barring substantial changes, I will vote against it. Here is my statement explaining why:

No one got everything - and there's work left undone to address per-pupil funding gaps in MKE - but once again, everyone got something.
As I said in May, WI needs more of this kid-first pragmatic policymaking, & less ideology-driven politics in K12 edu.

No HVAC upgrades, no remediation for lead paint that’s poisoning students - and again, indoor air quality was an actual priority!

Wait, they found unsafe lead dust levels at @MilwaukeeMPS schools AFTER cleaning and remediation were completed?! I’m running out of words to express outrage.

Wisconsin posted its worst NAEP reading scores in 2 decades, even worse than 2022. Mathematics was flat, still bad.
And look at Milwaukee. Guess how many Black MPS 4th graders were likely to get Question 1 wrong and how many 8th were likely to get Question 2 wrong.

I’m beyond tired of seeing @MilwaukeeMPS earn its way to the bottom of these lists by failing to educate far too many of our city’s young people - MKE students are brilliant and our families deserve better.

I wish this wasn’t so predictable, but the last 12 months of local and state education news headlines here made it clear this was the likely result.
We need change at every level.

In other news: Gov. Evers was highly critical of @WisconsinDPI changing student testing standards, describing the decision as a "mistake."

The Wisconsin Education Department ruled Reading Recovery is not banned under science of reading laws and gave De Pere a cookie for having to justify its use.
