My birthday wish as I turn 34 is to recapture the mindset of my kids on a swing.
Spoiler alert: I'm not so young anymore.
My 20s are a distant memory of freedom and travel, of work struggles, and of tons of time on Tel Aviv Beach.
My 30s are already past the pre-game phase, well into the middle.
Everywhere I look, I see signs that the relentless march of time has no pause button. My parents are aging, my body is aging, the sense of humour I'm exposed to in my parent-peer group is most definitely aging.
And the crazy thing is that I'm OK with all this aging. I'm no longer chasing the eternal summer of youth anymore.
Except in one area.
My brain.
My biggest fear has always been losing the capacity to think playfully, to break the molds of habit and let fresh ideas dance in my mind.
As I watched countless 'old people' get stuck in their ways, unable to appreciate novel perspectives, I swore to myself that I would never become like them.
Easier said than done, though.
Working dad life can be monotonous, forcing you to retreat to cerebral safe spaces and comfortable patterns of thought.
And as I gear up for my 35th year, I'm determined to embrace the other side of dad life instead.
The side that laughs at the excitement of play wrestling my child or dives into the ocean like it's my first time.
The side that stops to take in the boldness of a bright flower, and eats an ice cream slowly, as your very life depends on the next bite.
Because it does.
Because the alternative to living with a childlike sense of wonder is morphing into a plump, bald middle manager who hooks his phone to his belt and makes the kind of jokes that get you wondering how he ever got laid.
Finally, today is my Hebrew birthday, which means I have a special power of blessings.
