Don’t get confused, all these direct-to-fan music models still require you to BUILD A FANBASE FIRST. There’s no way to cut those corners, the work still needs to be done.

@matdryhurst But what if your focus is building an audience that helps you get to 500k streams/day?
Then you’re making ~$720k/year, far more than the vast majority of Americans.
Even with the web3 or patreon for music options you have to build a fanbase to support you.

It’s true a lot of the listeners are there. If you opt to post there, you will make ~$0.004 per stream for your music. That’s the deal. You’ll need 500k+ of those to have a shot at one months rent. Or you could try something else with better odds.

I appreciate the James Blake Vault thing as it gets one thing right: if you want people to pay for your music, don't also post it for free to streaming.
The model won't work for everyone. That is ok. Better chance than waiting for Spotify to change its model (not happening)

The biggest lie they ever told you was that Spotify was bad for the music industry. It’s only bad for people who have no traction. It wasn’t invented to create traction for anyone. It was created to reduce music piracy. Anyone who has close to a direct deal and fans who intentionally listen is making lots of $.

Spotify paid out a record-breaking $9 billion to the music industry in 2023. But I got a lot of questions on if this only benefits the big artists. The answer: nearly half, $4.5bn was generated by independent artists. This is a major shift for the industry, showing the changing landscape. I decided to do a video on this and some of the other payout questions I am getting. Let me know what you think.
