Kovai Sathyan, the official spokesperson of AIADMK, is doing a terrific job. The AIADMK needs to bring out its best speakers and refresh public memory about the party. Those above 40 already know all about AIADMK. Those below 40 need fresh perspectives and a new reason to buy into the party. MGR and Jayalalithaa still have their believers. But the top leadership needs to significantly raise its profile. There are many likeable qualities about Edappadiyaar that need highlighting. He is not the “slave” many make him out to be. He can be firm as steel when the situation demands it. He can also make peace with his foes if it makes sense to him. What we like about Edappadiyaar is that he is a Tamil leader who believes national cooperation works best for the state.

The problem with trying to sell a party like AIADMK to a younger generation is that AIADMK’s biggest strength is also its biggest weakness in the modern political context. It is fundamentally a maintenance party, not a movement party. It is built around governance, welfare delivery, and political pragmatism. That kind of politics is deeply valuable in real life, but it doesn’t produce the emotional high that younger voters increasingly crave. Selling a balanced, non-polarizing approach is inherently tougher in an era where younger voters who have their heads buried deep into social media often crave bold, transformative narratives ideas that feel like they're part of a revolution or something that possess a direct challenge to the status quo. DMK sells Social Revolution. Their narrative is "We are breaking the chains of the past." This appeals to the youth’s desire for justice and change. It feels like a movement. BJP: Sells Cultural/National Revolution. Their narrative is 'We are reclaiming glory.; This appeals to the youth’s desire for identity and pride. It feels like a crusade. They may appear like opposites on the surface, but structurally they sell the exact same political product. There was a glorious past (a golden age, a pure identity, a natural order). Something went wrong (decline, humiliation, loss of dignity). Outsiders did it (invaders, oppressors, colonisers, North Indians, Brahmins, missionaries, Mughals, etc.). We must restore what was stolen (revival, self-respect, cultural renaissance). You are part of a historic mission (you’re not just voting, you’re 'fighting back'). That template is unbelievably powerful because it gives people three things at once: meaning, belonging, and moral clarity. And this is also why AIADMK sits awkwardly between them. Because AIADMK doesn’t thrive on historical grievance. It thrives on present-day delivery. It doesn’t need to keep people angry. It needs to keep them stable. This is the unique spot AIADMK occupies. They are socially conservative (respect for tradition, temples, hierarchy) without being religious fundamentalists. This used to be the default setting of the Tamil voter. However, the polarization has forced people to pick a side: You are either Rationalist/Atheist (DMK alignment) or Hindu Nationalist(BJP alinment) Because the present generation is not growing up in a world where stability feels like an achievement. they don’t want a party like ADMK that says let’s keep things balanced. They want a party that says 'this is why you are suffering, and here is the villain, and here is how we destroy the villain.'

Football is caught between two imperatives — to want the referee’s decision to play its part, and to want absolute consistency. These are not compatible. It explains the differing refereeing of two 'identical' incidents that Michael Carrick called 'crazy' and led Manchester United and its 'furious' officials to say it will be making an official complaint. But this litigating, this demand for perfection, only fuels the cycle. 📝 @jwhitey98 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/71370…

Bournemouth also had a penalty shout turned away midway through the first half with Harry Maguire judged not to have pushed Evanilson in the back. Will be interesting to see whether PGMOL believe this talking point and the Amad incident involve similar types of contact. However, #MUFC are adamant VAR made a mistake, mostly notably because Adrian Truffert pulls back then pushes Amad.

Manchester United set to make a formal complaint today to PGMOL after the failure to award a second penalty in last night’s draw with Bournemouth. Club will argue Amad was clearly wrestled to ground with no attempt to play the ball. Manchester United are angry at what they perceive to be a clear VAR error. It is also noted similar penalty incidents were treated differently in the same game leading to Harry Maguire being sent off. #MUFC also unhappy with nine minutes of added time being played in the game.

If you think these decisions from Attwell and Pawson are just mistakes, you’re wrong. Take a look at the list below: 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐭𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥 (𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐞 / 𝐕𝐀𝐑) 1. Bournemouth 2–2 Man Utd (March 2026): Attwell ignored a clear foul on Amad in the box with no VAR intervention, but later awarded a soft penalty and red card to Maguire for a similar incident. The decisions sparked outrage, with fans and pundits calling them inconsistent and baffling. 2. Burnley vs Man Utd (Jan 2026): Attwell and Pawson disallowed Martínez’s equaliser for minimal contact, later ruled incorrect by the KMI Panel. Fans saw it as another costly and unjust decision by the same duo. 3. Middlesbrough vs Man Utd (FA Cup 2022): As VAR, Attwell allowed a goal despite a clear handball in the build-up, leading to United’s elimination. The incident remains a widely cited example of a major officiating error against the club. 4. Chelsea vs Man Utd (2021): Attwell denied a clear penalty and reportedly ignored VAR advice to avoid controversy. The decision fueled long-term frustration among fans over perceived reluctance to make big calls. 𝐂𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐰𝐬𝐨𝐧 (𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐞 / 𝐕𝐀𝐑) 1. Brentford 3–1 Man Utd (Sept 2025): Pawson awarded a penalty but failed to send off Collins for a clear DOGSO offence, with VAR not intervening. The KMI Panel later confirmed it as a major error, with fans believing it impacted the game’s outcome.

Petition for Stewart Att-not-well to stop officiating Man United games. He made sure against Burnley to disallow a clear goal for United and didn't send off Walker. The again today denied United a clear penalty and then Bournemouth scored from it and sent off Maguire.

United v Bournemouth. Here is the flaw in the system. Referees are frightened to make calls and think (as was the case last night) that they can defer to VAR. The problem is that the rules state VAR will only overturn a decision if it is clearly wrong. The penalty decisions couldn’t be overturned because pushing can be deemed subjective. It’s about the force used. Had the referee given the Amad one then it wouldn’t have been overturned, but he could use VAR as a way out. Obviously when you see the foul in each box they are as good as the same (red card aside) and so if one is given then so should the other. I suspect the referee may get away with his decisions when the PGMOL reviews them because of the subjective nature of the decision, but if anything all this does is point to the flaws in the rules. There is an over-reliance on individual interpretation and an overly restrictive VAR remit that prioritises minimal intervention over equitable application of the rules.
