That is why we are begging you all to have conversations with your kids, even when they are upset. Help them find ways to navigate their feelings, no matter how hard it is. Even when they are upset or emotional, find a way to explain how they messed up and how it can be prevented in the future. When you mess up as parents, apologize and talk about it with them. I’m not talking about people who weaponize the silent treatment in relationships. I’m talking about people who have difficulty expressing themselves when they are upset or when they feel wronged. Some people just shut down. No one helped them through it. They have lived with it for a decade or two. Yes, they can unlearn it as adults, but how about we teach them now to help prevent the need for unlearning in the future to save everybody’s time?
