ESCAPING COMMON NONSENSE IN THE DILUGE OF ONLINE INVESTMENT ADVISORS
To discern and live with common sense is one of life’s great hacks. But perhaps the greater and rarer hack is the ability to detect and avoid common nonsense. And the latter is far too common.
As the wise and perceptive Charlie Munger once observed:
“When somebody says old Joe has common sense, they don’t really mean that. They mean he has uncommon sense… Most people are a mass of crazy prejudices.”
Consider one of the obsessions constantly pushed by online investment advisors and motivational speakers: “Plan and invest for your retirement.”
Retirement has become the final stage in a culture that turns life into an endless conveyor belt of postponement. The common nonsense of making every stage of life merely a prerequisite for the next.
In nursery school, they told you to work hard so you could get into a good primary school. In primary school, it was about passing exams to enter a good secondary school. In secondary school, it became government scholarships, prestigious courses, and university placements.
Then came career progression. Professional courses. Promotions. Networking. Building a CV. Building a “future.”
And now they tell you to prepare for retirement.

UPDATE: The Kingfisher oil project is now more than 99% complete, with 18 new wells drilled and final testing underway ahead of first oil, according to CNOOC officials. Before production begins, teams are conducting emergency response drills, including tests of high-pressure firefighting systems and pipe-cutting equipment designed for worst-case scenarios. The activities form part of the pre-commissioning phase, aimed at ensuring all systems are fully operational and safety risks are adequately addressed ahead of Uganda’s oil production.
