Kannadiga is begging the police not to beat him 🥺 his only “crime” was trying to earn an honest living, which ofcourse Karnataka police don't like. Devanahalli police beat up a poor tea vendor for staying open late at night. Kannadigas u see, easy target, no risk. But do Karnataka police have the spine to enforce the same in Shivajinagar, where urdu speakers shops run openly till 3 AM? I can show you plenty. If these allegations are true, Karnataka police owe that Kannadiga a public apology.

People avoid govt schools despite paying taxes and an education cess, because the system has failed to earn their trust. Private schools exploit this compulsion. With no real alternatives, parents are squeezed and intimidated. Here, a principal from a reputed private school in Hardoi is berating parents for buying books from a cheaper shop instead of the school’s designated vendor. The insulting tone, “shut up,” “naam kaat do”, says it all. Almost everyone with power in India abuses it to bully those without it.

I agree with Anand. We cannot conveniently call an election targeted freebie a welfare scheme. If these are indeed welfare schemes, why are they not launched pan India at the same time? Why are they launched right before every state election after looking at the other party's offering and going one up. The fact is that the BJP has wholeheartedly adopted the Revdi scheme it once ridiculed and gone one up given the funds at its disposal. Votes have been reduced to a transaction where a voter chooses the scheme that benefits him/ her more. Democracy has been reduced to a barter trade where the highest freebie wins. I agree that we don't have national alternatives to the Election machine that is the BJP, no rational person will support this behavior. Sycophants have skin in the game, so they will not bite the hand that feeds them. Others will and should call freebies as such and not indulge in dressing them up in terms like welfare benefits. We all know doling out freebies is akin to riding a tiger. You simply can't get off.

Just to be clear here. A new party always takes votes from the anti-incumbent. Check AAP in Delhi and Punjab. Or BJP in Bengal. Most likely #TVK will take away votes from ADMK and others, thereby helping DMK. May 4th we'll know for sure.

Prediction: (Have been studying seat by seat data.) NDA+TVK vote share together will be more than 50%.Total anti DMK vote could be 60% or even higher if you consider NTK also as largely anti DMK. If TVK takes equal percentage of votes from both AIADMK and DMK then there could be a photofinish. If AIADMK retains its hold in the Kongu belt they will have the edge. For the DMK to win comfortably, the AIADMK must lose a significant part of its rural vote to the DMK. I am not seeing that happening in a widespread manner across the State. What happens in the cities does not matter as much for the AIADMK. A total sweep for any party seems unlikely. More in the next few days.

Various state police are sending notices to Twitter seeking user details even for trivial issues, like mere criticism of state functioning. Such cases rarely hold up in court, and even the police know it. They still proceed because they know that the process is the punishment. They seek details; Twitter notifies the user that the police want their information, that alone is usually enough to scare most people. If details are shared, the user is called to the police station for questioning. In most cases, they’re let go after that, but by then the process has worn them down enough to deter them from speaking again. So people, waqt sahi nahi hai. Unless you have strong backing and/or big money, be careful about what you write. The rights you think you have don’t actually exist if a state decides to go after you.

I understand the yearning for change. I understand how sick people feel about crime and corruption. I also understand that people’s lives have stagnated and they want someone to come and give that deliverance. But Vijay offers nothing new. He will continue the same dravidian culture of large scale corruption. Not because he is good or bad but because a cradle to grave welfare system with a massive government, a bloated bureaucracy and a patronage network that needs to be fed, will always by definition be corrupt. Vijay has not once said that he will privatise x or y. He has not said how he will spur sme growth ( i don’t expect that kind of intelligence from him because smarter people like VAN in the GoI are scratching their heads at this seemingly intractable problem). I am saying all this because i hope serious people who want Vijay to win because of personal axes that they want to grind can think this through. I hope some semi educated Vijay fans think this through too.

Anonymous My son is autistic. Nonverbal. He’s eight. We went to a restaurant. Family place. He got overwhelmed. Started stimming. Rocking. Making sounds. People stared. A woman at the next table said loudly “Can’t you control your child? This is ridiculous.” I was gathering our things to leave. We always leave. Then our waiter came over. Young guy. Maybe twenty. He knelt down next to my son. Started rocking with him. Gently. Matching his rhythm. My son stopped. Looked at him... The waiter smiled and said “I got you, buddy. You’re okay.” Stayed there for five minutes. Just rocking. Being present. My son calmed completely. The waiter stood up and said “My brother’s autistic. I know the rocking helps.” Brought my son french fries. On the house. Sat with us while we ate. That woman who complained got up and left. The waiter said “Good riddance.” My son smiled. He never smiles at strangers. We finished our meal. Peacefully. I tried to tip extra. The waiter refused. Said “Your son deserves to eat out like everyone else.” We’ve been back six times. Same waiter. Same kindness. My son looks for him now. Gets excited. Because someone saw him. Not his autism. Him.
