James Fenimore Cooper. Leatherstocking Tales had huge cultural influence. American themes: wilderness, settlers, indigenous people. Natty Bumpo ("Hawkeye") is first great American icon, distinctly American, not European, seen at various stages of his life & American history.

Who Is America’s Homer? If England has Shakespeare, Spain has Cervantes, Italy has Dante, and Russia has Pushkin, then who do we have? Do we have a great poet who captures the American spirit, the American story, the American identity? We asked for contributions from ‍@fxxfy, @DanaGioiaPoet, @zenahitz, Emily Wilson, @ae_stallings, @_Zeets, @JcScharl, @amjuster, @RossBarkan, Christian Wiman. plough.com/articles/who-i…

In 1831, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a short story that challenged America’s founding myths, John Swansburg writes. Then it disappeared: theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

@IVMiles The Oval Office decor under Kennedy or Bush Sr. vs. Trump is a great example of old money vs. new money aesthetics.

The essential aesthetic modesty of the presidency was always one of its (very few) remaining charms. The Atlantic City-ification of the White House grounds—ballroom, UFC, etc—just reinforces how coarse and braggadocio American society in all corners has become.

When King George III’s papers were made public, they revealed a vivid sense of who this monarch was—Rick Atkinson wrote last year—and why he chose to wage a war against his own people across 3,000 miles of open ocean. theatln.tc/FItMPMWn

Delighted to learn that at the Congresss of Berlin, a young Arthur Balfour had a discussion with Bismarck about their shared love of the novels of Sir Walter Scott.

I am thrilled that @ae_stallings answered this question with Laura Ingalls Wilder. While the whole series is a formative text for the American character, the eponymous third volume is one of the starkest and most haunting depictions of pioneer life imaginable and "The Long Winter" is one of the subtlest and yet most perfectly described depictions of human suffering I have ever seen.
