This is funny. I have visited many times but never been stationed there. A friend of mine loves it. He told me a fascinating story over Memorial Day about how it’s illegal in Italy to stop people from stealing your stuff if they break into your home. Apparently his villa had a panic room (18th century piece of wood like a barn door that rolled and locked shut for the master bedroom). A group of Gypsies broke into his place and just took what they wanted. Hard no from me dog.

Living in Italy for two years was a great time, but it made me realize how much we take for granted as Americans. A few things: I paid 2700 €/month for a one-bedroom apartment. My washer and dryer were half of normal size. My “air conditioning” was two of those units that would be in CHUs in Iraq/Afghanistan. If I had the dryer and AC on at the same time, it would trip the circuit breaker. The dryer had no exhaust, so I had to empty a water tank into the sink after drying clothes. Buildings might be built to last in Europe, but houses in the United States are built to live in.

Have you heard of anyone who has got out of the military while stationed overseas and chose to remain in that country instead of returning to the U.S.?

@TheLtColUSMC This is quite accurate because the truth is, most prior service Army and Marines (including myself) will tell people to join the Air Force or even Navy because quality of life is often abysmal. Especially for Marines having to have roommates in the barracks and no POV in Japan.
