Purely anecdotal, but I play with strangers at LGSs, and there's always the same question when I/someone else sits, "So, what decks are we playing?" Which usually turns into, "Well, I'm using proxies," or "I have fast mana," or something.

@iwrites @CoffeeAtom @themtginsider @mtgcommander I understand your point of view, but the banlist helps to have fair matches when playing outside our LGS or kitchen table. If I’m attending to an event or to a different LGS, that banlist allows me to play with new friends with less problems of balance among our decks.

Our Recommendation to the @mtgcommander rules committee after today's banning: There are massive financial implications for players who spent time and money saving or trading for Commander chase rares. Today's ban, whether good or bad for the format, has had serious impacts on players' wallets. This ban comes just a year after MTG marketed Jeweled Lotus as the premier chase rare of Commander Masters Not only that, Mana Crypt was a chase showcase rare of Ixalan only a year ago, with multiple versions and treatments that were highly collectible. Today, tens of thousands of MTG players, and LGS, woke up to find their chase rare cards have lost 50-75% of its value. There was no warning that this banning was imminent. Players were buying Jeweled Lotus at full price only a week ago, without the chance to ever play them. Now, the card does literally nothing. We are reading stories of MTG players devastated that their collections have lost a massive amount of value. Ouch, imagine you were the above player? MTG players deserve more communication prior to bans of this level of financial impact. These bans should not come as a surprise. My recommendation to the Commander Rules Committee is as follows: 1. Given that the Rules Committee has stated that these bans are not snap decisions, and are given plenty of time for due process, players should be informed ahead of time when a card is subject to ban discussion. This gives players a chance to rethink their $100 purchases of cards that could be banned soon. It also notifies all players at the same time that a card is under ban consideration. The period between when a card is up for "ban discussion" and then "banned" shouldn't be where the MTG community is in the dark, and potentially blowing money on things like Commander Masters Collector boxes or Neon Foil Ink Mana Crypts a week before they are banned. 2. During the above period, players should have time to submit input on why or why not they would like a card banned. Don't limit the majority of a decision to a handful of select people. The MTG Commander community is wide and diverse, and more people should be given the chance to input, especially when they are investing their time and money into the cards that may get banned. 3. We need a restated set of guidelines or expectations around what else could be banned. Are tutors safe from bans? Are fast mana lands like Gaea's Cradle or Ancient Tomb safe from bans? Why should a player today go out and buy an expensive powerful card, if it could be banned out of the blue? Today's decision to ban premier chase cards may have been discussed for years and were carefully thought out, but from the perspective of players who are buying and playing with these cards, it appears rash and thoughtless in consideration. Could Gaea's Cradle be banned tomorrow? Who knows? At least a more careful and transparant process can bring greater confidence to players. The reaction from the MTG community today is clear that something more is needed. #mtg #magicthegathering #mtgcommander #edh #mtgfinance #mtgban

It feels easier to Rule 0 power levels instead of saying "this is the way you're going to play," which takes away the self-expression part of the game. (imo)

@iwrites @CoffeeAtom @themtginsider @mtgcommander I disagree. Commander, as any other format, has a philosophy behind and follows specific rules/pace decided by those who created it. That IS Commander. If people don’t like it, they can use the rule zero or create their own format (like Duel Commander or Centurion).

@SaffronOlive @mikebuck7 Way the RC arbitrarily wants them to play just feels wrong and against the spirit of commander, imo. As for rule 0 to play the banned cards...doubtful, especially sitting down with strangers. And cedh people won't rule 0 it because it takes away the spirit of competition, i feel.

It's funny to see so many people say "rule zero." Even discounting that I think Commander has outgrown rule zero (it's great for playgroups, but imo bad for games with strangers which are becoming more and more common), can't you just rule zero in the banned cards?
