San Antonio Zoo 🦍@SanAntonioZoo

The tiniest predator with the biggest personality just hatched at San Antonio Zoo! We are thrilled to announce the arrival of a pint-sized powerhouse, a pygmy falcon chick, who made its grand debut on March 18, 2025. Weighing in at just 6.5 grams (a little more than a quarter) and hatched fully feathered, this bundle of joy has already stolen hearts and turned heads. Not only is this chick a symbol of hope for its species, but it's also a record-breaker. According to the zoo database Species360 Zoological Information Management System, this is the only pygmy falcon chick to hatch in any U.S. zoo in the last year! And what's even more exciting? This chick is the 12th pygmy falcon chick hatched at San Antonio Zoo, but the first one since 2004, making it a truly special event for our team. The proud parents, Squiggy (the male) and Laverne (the female) are living proof that love is in the air! Both parents hatched at the San Diego Zoo, Squiggy in 2023 and Laverne in 2021, and now they've formed their own little dynasty at San Antonio Zoo. Living in the behind-the-scenes Avian Reproduction Center (ARC), this cozy couple has been together for about a year, and their teamwork is nothing short of inspirational. "While mom and dad are very proud parents, our amazing team of skilled Aviculture Animal Care Specialists has the newest chick set up in "The NEST," a building where Aviculture Animal Care specialists hand rear baby birds. The decision to hand-raise this chick offers a greater chance of success in adulthood. This little bird is cared for by staff who hand feed every 2 hours from 7 am to 7 pm during the early stages of development. The Pygmy Falcon chick is currently in a special incubation unit that helps replicate the temperature needed for the early stages of development. With their striking gray plumage and a signature patch of chestnut feathers on the female's back, pygmy falcons are as beautiful as they are resourceful. This species is known for its unusual nesting habits, finding comfort in the homes of social weavers and even protecting their nests from predators—which gives the term "roommates" a whole new meaning! However, there are times when these falcons turn the tables and prey on the weavers themselves. "This Pygmy Falcon chick's hatching is a monumental achievement for our animal care and conservation teams," said Tim Morrow, President & CEO of San Antonio Zoo. "Through our conservation programs, this birth contributes to the survival of its species and strengthens our passion and purpose. San Antonio Zoo is committed to securing a future for wildlife, and this little falcon proves we're on the right track. Plus, who can resist that tiny, feather-filled cuteness?" While all the members of this new family reside behind the scenes, you can still get a close-up look at another pygmy falcon, Shirley, who resides in Birds of the World at the Zoo! San Antonio Zoo continues to lead the charge in species survival, from its breeding programs to groundbreaking research. This pygmy falcon chick represents these efforts, showcasing the results of dedication, innovation, and a lot of heart. Follow San Antonio Zoo's social media channels for behind-the-scenes updates and adorable photos that are sure to make your day. For now, please celebrate with us as we welcome this tiny but mighty addition to our zoo family!

Sibling rivalry is alive and well, especially among Sandhill cranes. And nothing beats the classic silent stare from a disapproving parent. These young cranes are always sparring, but this little altercation cracked me up. The chick coming in from the right looked genuinely excited to see its older sibling, but the one coming in from the left clearly had other plans… like total domination. Watch the foot stomps. They are ridiculously cute. And if you look closely, you will see a tiny swat with that little nub of a wing. Pure drama. Everything was going perfectly until the adult caught sight of it. That is when the universal silent stare worked its magic. Instant transformation. Both chicks suddenly became innocent little angels. Classic.
