Clarence Thomas is a brilliant man and one of the greatest justices of all time. He also needs to retire immediately. He's 77 years old. If Democrats win the midterms and then the presidency, which they very likely could, there's a significant chance they will get to replace him with another Kentanji Brown Jackson. That would be a disaster for the country. We need to get young conservatives on the court right now. Alito, too. He's 76.

You skipped Nomo. If it wasn’t for Nomo, there’s no Ichiro, etc etc. Nomo forced a framework to be established between MLB and NPB for transfer of players while not destroying NPB. Did you know Nomo was hated by Japan baseball and baseball reporters when he was going to MLB? The old Japan baseball people probably still don’t like him because they left Nomo out in the prior WBC promo featuring prominent Japanese players…the American announcer had to bring up Nomo. Ichiro thanked Nomo during his hall of fame induction speech too.

When I was a kid, Japanese baseball was this weird quirk that only nerds were into — you had to work really hard at knowing who Sadaharu Oh was, and even then, nobody in the US cared. A cool geopolitical story about post-WWII reconciliation, but that was about it. It eventually graduated to being on the radar only because it is where washed-up players went — as the surprisingly good movie Mr. Baseball highlights. But still a joke. That changed with Ichiro, and of course now with Shohei, who has made MLB fun, relevant, and interesting again. Baseball is, certainly globally, as, if not more, Japan-coded than it is US-coded. It is Shohei's sport now more than Babe Ruth's. Never, not once, before 1995 could I ever imagine that Japan would basically save the "American Pastime" from decades of stat-induced irrelevance and boredom. But that is what it has done. Amazingly.
