@Tom_R_Alliance Which is precisely what they do in Canberra - it's a system designed to actually prepare students for what comes next, whereas in nz we seem to have this philosophy that secondary school is just about funneling as many students as possible into university

@j_har_ford I've always thought that given the massive necessary public infrastructure works needed in the immediate term to, for example, electrify as much as possible, expand rail, etc, then some sort of system of trades-with-educational work for people leaving high school early...

I have to give the government credit here, these changes definitely seem like a step in the right direction. It's still lacking the right sort of curriculum (the new one has a disappointingly low level of Māori) and in addition (THREAD) rnz.co.nz/news/top/59066…

When devising a new education system, we really ought to take inspiration from the Canberran system, which I can say from direct experience sets up students SIGNIFICANTLY better than the woeful situation we have here.

I would like to see an alternative pathway open to those students who do not want to pursue UE. At school in Aotearoa I felt like university was rammed down my throat at every opportunity, and it's one of the reasons I very nearly dropped out in 2023 (thread)
