Zinc has been called "The Wonder Drug for the Treatment of Cancers (Carcinomas)" by some researchers - this is why: What stands out first is that it's extremely common for zinc levels to be lower in cancerous tissue than in healthy tissue. This is most exemplified in prostate cancer - across these studies an average decrease of over 60% in zinc levels. It's not just limited to the prostate, though. Liver and pancreatic cancers also have decreased levels of zinc. We can see here that the worse the cancer gets, the less zinc it has. However - zinc is TOXIC to cancer cells. Zinc treatment to prostate cancer cells directly induces apoptosis or cellular suicide. This is a highly necessary process to eliminate cancer cells. But this isn't just killing all cells like many cancer treaments. The researchers have stated that "The higher zinc levels that exist in the normal cells are cytotoxic in the malignant cells." And this appears to be true - even normal to low concentrations of zinc, which are common in healthy cells, are highly toxic to cancer cells. They induce the damage and death of cancerous lymphoma cells, but at these same levels are harmless to healthy lymphocytes. Zinc treatment actually shrinks tumors by about ~50% in animal studies. At least in this paper on prostate cancer, they showed this dramatic effect with zinc sulfate alone. Other studies have shown better outcomes with zinc ionophores like Clioquinol. An ionophore essentially helps bring zinc into cells without the need for its transporter, which are downregulated in cancer. In this paper up to an 85% reduction in tumor volume. Why exactly does zinc have this effect? The main reason the researchers discuss is due to its ability to upregulate the mitochondrial apoptosis mechanism. Zinc increases the expression of a protein called Bax, which forms pores in the mitochondrial membrane and leads to the release of cytochrome c, a mitochondrial enzyme. This goes on to signal a series of cellular events that tells the cell to close up shop and die. As we've seen - it really has this effect in cancer cells, and not as much in healthy cells. This is NOT me saying zinc will automatically cure a person's cancer. But it is saying that zinc clearly plays an important role in cancer. Considering many cancer patients are low on it, and it's incredibly safe, it should be a high priority.
