@hrstnvrgrwngp Virtually everyone did it. It was a whole epidemic for a while. Chris Martin even did it running fucking backwards.

Sydney Sweeney has truly mastered her styling because if you saw her in the wild like this you’d think she was a totally average person

They’re JUMPING my ass on stan twitter cause no one read past the title but my thesis is NOT that these girls do not have talent, it’s that raw ability is not the main selling point anymore, artistically. Many of these women do have excellent vocal range or lyrical ability or dancing ability or can dissolve into a character they’re playing but unlike previous eras where you had to, like, play instruments or be vocally the next Whitney Houston or a dancing prodigy like MJ, we intuitively understand and accept with no sense of irony that someone like Addison Rae who is in just about every sense of the word, a “pastiche artist,” can make a career out of “serving cunt.” We recognize that in itself as the selling point. Many of these artists are incredibly capable and talented in one way or another, but the difference is that’s not really what they’re selling. They’re selling a vibe. An experience. A mood board. I think the most fitting term for the phenomenon I’m describing is metamodern art. So, Addison is heavily marketed and playing into being the next coming of Britney: "Britney's daughter." But it's tongue-in-cheek. We all know she isn’t REALLY Britney and basically never can be, even when she’s constantly paying homage, inserting little easter eggs into her iconography, and largely studying her as the blueprint. But she's not playing into this knowing irony with total detachment or apathy. She's quite earnestly inspired. Metamodernism is that secret third thing, encompassing the sincerity of modernism AND the cynical irony of postmodernism, but not quite submitting to either. From metamodernism theory (by Luke Turner): “Whereas postmodernism was characterised by deconstruction, irony, pastiche, relativism, nihilism, and the rejection of grand narratives (to caricature it somewhat), the discourse surrounding metamodernism engages with the resurgence of sincerity, hope, romanticism, affect, and the potential for grand narratives and universal truths, whilst not forfeiting all that we’ve learnt from postmodernism. Thus, rather than simply signalling a return to naïve modernist ideological positions, metamodernism considers that our era is characterised by an oscillation between aspects of both modernism and postmodernism. We see this manifest as a kind of informed naivety, a pragmatic idealism, a moderate fanaticism, oscillating between sincerity and irony, deconstruction and construction, apathy and affect, attempting to attain some sort of transcendent position, as if such a thing were within our grasp. The metamodern generation understands that we can be both ironic and sincere in the same moment; that one does not necessarily diminish the other.”

What find interesting is that the PUA culture of the late 2000s/early 2010s didn't care about looks at all. They would even suggest wearing borderline goofy stuff and weren't afraid of making a fool of themselves. Ego was the enemy. Attitude > appearance. Now the exact opposite is popular and we have high-ego looksmaxxers who can't interact with women without drugging themselves.

@p8stie Wait you’re actually proud to be American? I thought you were constantly driving (?) around the country with a fag in your mouth to expose the inanity of it all. Disappointing. What was I thinking?
