The hypothesis behind the Mahan campaign is that the California voter is a rational creature who wants basic public services delivered efficiently. Mahan is without a doubt the most thoughtful and reasonable Dem in the race, but it is not clear that this hypothesis is correct.

I can't cover everything in every post. I was there in Washington as a GOP Congressman from Michigan when it happened. The reason for the student uprising at the US embassy was that Jimmy Carter foolishly gave the Shah sanctuary in the US after he was overthrown, and did so on the advice of David Rockefeller and other Council on Foreign Relations poobahs. The students who took over the embassy only wanted: 1) the Shah sent back to Iran to face justice after 25 years of thieving the wealth of the country and brutally suppressing dissent via his gestapo like secret police; 2) return of upwards of $20 billion that had been stolen by the Shah and hidden abroad; 3) an apology by Washington for the CIA coup in 1953 which overthrew the country's duly elected prime minister in order to protect British Petroleum and other oil interests. These demand were reasonable under the circumstances and could have been agreed to in a heartbeat by Carter. But his warmongering chief advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, persuaded him to try the midnight rescue of Desert One, instead. That was a disaster and the rest is history---47 years of utterly unecessary conflict with Tehran. Actually, in the context of the entire so-called War on Terrorism, the badder guys were Sunni Muslims, not Iranian Shiites. The latter actually rallied to the support of the US after the Sunni-inflicted attack on 9-11. Of course, Donald Trump and his MAGA HAT minions know none of this history, nor none of much else.

Attended the CA governor debate on housing last Friday. Frankly, I was astonished by how unprepared @TomSteyer and @XavierBecerra are on the topic. They both kept rambling vague plans. This is the most important problem in CA, touching every facet of our economy, from affordability to homelessness and the two leading candidates have no clear idea of how to solve it. @MattMahanSJ was a standout performer and maybe the only one fully qualified to govern the State.

The disturbing truth about Iuliia Mendel's interview with Tucker Carlson is that the media, certainly in the UK, but I suspect across Europe, has mostly ignored it. This is terrible. In any sane world Mendel, who is a Ukrainian patriot and a stern critic of Russia, and who knows ZELENSKY and the inner workings of the system he operates, is someone who the media should want to interview, and whose articles they should want to publish. That however is not the most important fact about these actions. What is important is the extent of the corruption they expose. Corruption, as is clear at least to me, is today the organising principle of Ukrainian politics, and will remain so whilst ZELENSKY continues in charge. Every European citizen is required to accept a reduction in standard of living because of the support our governments give to Ukraine. We pay for this support through higher taxes, higher food and energy bills, higher interest payments, and through funds spent to support Ukraine, which are not spent on domestic needs. We see the results of this all around us. Our governments and media however want us to know as little as possible about the true nature of the political system in Kiev we are supporting. Witnesses, such as Iuliia Mendel, must not be heard. In the meantime ZELENSKY gets hosted by our King. This does not help Ukraine or its people. It corrodes our democracy and impoverishes us.
