@AlexGodofsky It's gotta be straining to be continuously wrong. Someone in a discord I'm in wrote back in February "I predict the bottom will fall out of the industry within a month or two."

I saw an acquaintance commiserating about people at her office getting into AI a lot, and she followed it up with "I wonder what they'll do when it all goes away." A bunch of people really believe that AI is all investor subsidies and it's a bad dream they'll wake up from soon.

@ByrneHobart I wonder what nearly $500k worth of security looks like. Seems kind of small.

I checked UnitedHealth's proxy statement, and the new UnitedHealthCare CEO who replaced Brian Thompson is making 2.2x as much, including $448,276 worth of executive security. I guess shooting CEOs doesn't make healthcare cheaper. Back to the drawing board, I guess.

@SandyofCthulhu He's only 63. Though he scuba dives often -- at least he has a hospital ship in his fleet. Still, given how humanity's tech tree is looking, I wouldn't give him much worse odds of making it to the longevity escape velocity than those younger. He might just not die.

Gabe Newell owns the majority share in Steam. Now, I know Newell somewhat. We've met. We've talked. He's not a close friend by any means. But it is by his will and genius that Steam is the way it is - a triumph of good guy capitalism. A great site for finding games, with cheap prices, frequent sales. Well ... I don't need to praise it here. You guys all know about it. When Newell passes away, it's unclear what will happen with Steam. Doubtless his shares will go to his family. Will they continue his vision? Or will they sell out to one of the many circling sharks who have been trying to buy it for years? What will happen if the sharks DO get their teeth into Steam? I believe that in that case Steam will go to hell in a handbasket. Owned by men in suits who don't give a sh*t about quality or the consumer. Probably it will become a subscription service or worse. If it gets sold to a horror show like Electronic Arts or Disney it'll be a nightmare. The only mitigating feature is that a different service might arise, but it will need to fight the rotting lumbering corpse of Steam to establish itself. I am content that since I am several years older than Gabe, it is plausible that I won't live to see this terrible day. But you might. Gabe Newell, to me, is literally barring the gates to Hell for us all.

@aristgi @msprcunt @blacknredtext Hitting 94% was easy in the 20th century. But "the branches made a pact with Satan and quantum mechanics…the branches cast evil spells on future generations of processors…like “scaling-induced voltage leaks” and “increasing levels of waste heat”" Black magic is the only counter

@frisbeedawg_ Adventures' Great Fox is still my favorite. Less angular, grimy and run down after depleting the funds from 64, the remodel for Assault shows where the new funds went. Its thrust effect was also really cool. I'm excited to see what the new one looks like after blowing Sector Z.

@BoomerZoomer34 @Kyithios @JesuroShimuzu BoomerZoomer-kun... old games didn't have achievements at all... (I do sometimes enjoy replaying some old games with RetroAchievements. They have a hardcore/softcore divide to try and appease both perspectives here. But I won't believe any claims of skill without poasting vids.)

@Kyithios @JesuroShimuzu They're a public display of your skill, tenacity, and dedication to the game the more and harder of its achievements you have unlocked. It gives people the idea you're good at the game when you're not, having cheated. Old games had the right idea, using cheats = no achievements.

Why does anyone think inverting a binary tree is hard? Do people really have that much trouble with recursion? def invert(tree): if tree == None: return tree.left, tree.right = tree.right, tree.left invert(tree.left) invert(tree.right)
Yuchen Jin@Yuchenj_UW

I’m so glad AI killed LeetCode interviews. For 10 years, tech companies made every engineer grind the same puzzles and prove they could invert a binary tree from memory. Today, the dumbest AI model can walk in and one-shot the entire interview. Thank you, AI.

@xxirael @KodaiiVasto @virus9414 @Girl_Dm_ @KisaiTenshi It's very cool. Outside of Japan I wouldn't worry much, though it still seems at least slightly legally dubious. I'm not a lawyer. A defense on the logic of game rentals: it's exclusive timed access for 1 person backed by 1 paid copy. But games are sold as licenses, not ownership

@suzy0maru I'm so glad to hear you're back home safe! (I thought it wasn't until later.) I'm sorry you had such a bad experience going under… at least it's over, hope the memory won't trouble you too much and you won't ever need to do it again. Wishing for your full and speedy recovery🙏

Finally back home after a few days of being in the hospital for my surgery. Thank you everyone for wishing me a good recovery. 🙏💓 Unfortunately my first time under general anesthesia felt a bit traumatic for me. I believe the paralytics might have taken effect on me first before being fully sedated, so when I felt the coldness from the medication going through the IV, my chest immediately began to feel tight with limited motion so I coughed and then I couldn’t breathe at all - I felt like I was suffocating (as an asthmatic sort of not an unfamiliar experience but I didn’t expect this to happen in this instance). All I could do at that moment was try to keep calm, close my eyes for a few seconds and pray to knock out as soon as possible. I still get nervous thinking back on it. Fortunately, I woke up fine after the surgery and had no problems communicating in Japanese with the kind nurses but day 1 was a painful recovery. I only really heard of others’ experiences of just peacefully going to sleep gradually or counting down until fully sedated when getting general anesthesia. Different methods and bodies react differently so please don’t feel bad for sharing of having a good experience with it! I notified my nurse afterwards about it and my experience was not usual. I won’t be able to fully dance for a few weeks due to recovery. I love to dance but I will have to wait so I can properly heal. Hopefully I can finally breathe in 4K and heal well 🙏 I still lost my voice too so hopefully it will come back soon as well!

@egg_oni @brainnoworko This is a complaint I frequently find myself making when looking for painting photos, there's so much inconsistency and some of my favorites look horrid if just looking at the first few in a search. Another version of that Monet: wikiart.org/en/claude-mone… Dreadfully bright.

@footbirl Sometimes. It's some sort of indictment that Super Mario Bros Wonder has more innovation in single levels than entire years of various indie 2D platformers.

@ItemsENABLED @SilverMelee @Gat0kTwitt_456 I didn't like the effect in general. The specific game was supposed to be one of the best implementations but I just remember it looking awful like the rest of the early 3DS games I tried at stores. Brief exposure to the "New 3DS" didn't change my opinion, but never saw SF on it.

@jachy @SilverMelee @Gat0kTwitt_456 Do you mean that the specific game didn't implement it properly or you just don't like the 3d effect in general? I refuse to turn the 3D slider down on any game I've ever played

@SilverMelee @ItemsENABLED @Gat0kTwitt_456 Lastly the "3D" effect was awful, but that was my opinion for the whole generation based on occasional play at store kiosks. I only much later got a "New 2DS XL" for a few games, SF64 3D not one of them.

@SilverMelee @ItemsENABLED @Gat0kTwitt_456 The graphics are nice in isolation but often put things in an uncanny valley if comparing to the original; very different and sometimes soulless style while also not going far enough to differentiate. (The upcoming version goes further, I have no real complaints.)

@ItemsENABLED @SilverMelee @Gat0kTwitt_456 Much of the fanbase has never played it. It was decent on original hardware and mostly liked at the time 20 (omg...) years ago. Of course everyone was at least somewhat disappointed, few people loved it, but it wasn't bad. I only have malice for SF64 3D.

@sudox7 Nothing to do with dynamic typing, just Python's choice of implementation. Other dynamic languages have tagged objects. You can have 31 bits for integers that fit in that range, and use the last bit as a tag to signal it's something else.

something that bothers me every time I think about it: a Python integer takes 28 bytes of memory. a C int takes 4. it's not a Python bug. it's the price of dynamic typing. every Python object carries a reference count, a type pointer, and size metadata. a million integers in Python costs 28MB same in C costs 4MB.
