I first heard the Bob Weir helmed “Jack Straw” a month after my college graduation when I went to a Dead & Co show without knowing much about them. That song introduced me to a side of music I’d only ever heard about; a side that was an honest, realtime expression of the soul without worrying about the rigidity of the chart. It wasn’t a paint by numbers, it was conversational. To this day, after years of obsessively combing through the decades of Grateful Dead live tapes, “Jack Straw” will always be my favorite because as a guitarist, it helped me rediscover that the instrument wasn’t a tool, it was an extension of you. I mean, who goes from an E to G#m? That’s technically ridiculous but it feels so right and evocative in context. Thank you, Bob Weir for the song that changed my life.
