The table you’ve shown is misleading- the 96% for Aston Villa is from 2023/24 accounts covering 13 months of wages vs only 12 months of revenue (year-end shift). Villa’s wages-to-revenue ratio is high because revenue lagged during rapid growth, not because the club is “bankrupting itself.” PSR is a rolling calculation, spending to reach Europe comes before the revenue uplift from Europe. That’s literally how every ambitious club has grown. Tottenham didn’t “build finances over decades” by magic, they; • Took on huge stadium debt • Benefited from years of top 4 revenue before PSR was tightened • Spent aggressively before their revenue peaked Villa are doing the same thing, just in a harsher PSR environment. I've been watching a bunch of Villa games back and, regardless what you think of the sustainability of their approach, one of the things that has been swept under the carpet by their run of results is the point about predictability. But I don't think this gets them off the hook.
