@EddLeal29 Untrue. This is not State of Texas $$. It combines federal covid spending, local property taxes, and state aid. Per pupil spending is basically flat, even though teachers have lots of higher paying opportunities due to our booming economy.

Imagine if Dallas gave even just two fucks about their downtown.
Dallas deserves to have a downtown as dense and lively as Manhattan. The bones are there. They just need someone with he vision and leadership to make it happen.

UT Austin just axed the station manager of its beloved local NPR affiliate after disagreements over a festival the station recently hosted. The manager was told she could resign, to which @dhiott said, "you know, well, you'll have to fire me," per @kut @neenareports. kut.org/education/2026…

I've never really understood the "starter home" thing. It seems based on the misperception that buying a home that you'll only live in for a few years is wise financially.

Everyone agrees that we need more Starter Homes ... and *only* way to make "Starter Homes" more affordable TODAY, is to build them smaller. Like they used to be But rather than focus on just size (<1400sf), I think it's more important to focus on function: A "Starter hHome" is just large enough where a couple feels ready to start their family. It’s smaller so that it is more affordable so a younger (or less wealthy) couple feels comfortable having a baby right now. If it's far away from where they currently live, or too expensive for them to afford then it doesn't fulfill its primary purpose And that is why I think that high quality rowhomes (both attached and detached) are a large part of the solution. They allow people who currently live in apartments to have kids & STAY in the their current neighborhood. At least for a little while longer. 2BR/1BA apartments and small single family detached matter too.

@two_wheel_atx Haha, PA is a big state! I don't really know how to define a starter home; again it's a concept I don't really buy into.
We're in the process of buying a house in Ambler. I'm sure some would call it a "starter home" since it's only 2BR, but we intend to live in it long-term.

@JackCraver Yes, I didn't it was optional but wouldn't yield any payment benefit. What's your idea of a starter home in PA? It was under $125k 20 years ago. It was an hour outside the city limits. And it was nicer land than here in Austin.

@JackCraver I've had two starter homes. Cost of repairs were marginal compared to the equity I gained. Did most of the repairs myself. I didn't come from money and had no assistance. Building equity was how I was able to move and buy from PA to TX. Survived the 08 market and pray for today's

@TacosFromGod Glad it worked out for you. But talk to someone who bought a house in Austin in 2021 and is trying to sell now and you'll hear a very different story.

Was great. Gained equity while salary and savings grew. Yes we had expenses, closing, etc. but stock market would’ve been a stressful roller coaster in 2008.

Analytics is a good way to look and maybe if they focused on fraud and abuse it would have had more success.

Austin councilman Mike Siegel says we should be using city staff instead of consultants
I agree! I think we are at a very unique moment where the socialists, the union, and conservatives can align against the city's managerial bureaucracy to DOGE the city budget. They won't support staff reductions, but we can still cut the consultants, the softwares, and other things to make a big difference
The union members in this meeting came to the table with cut ideas. One even mentioned specifically that she knew a useless program that could be cut to save $5 milion / year.
Big things are happening.

@CasaGraphicaATX What's not to like? The closing costs, the cost of maintenance and repairs, the realtor fees.
On average I think a young person would be better off simply putting their savings in the stock market.

@JackCraver Live in it for 5 years, rent it for 5 years and live (renting) elsewhere. After 10 years roll your tax free gains into a new downpayment on a bigger house.... what's not to like? If you're early in your career, it can be a huge hedge on future cost of living in a city you like.
