@DaveScarangella I’ve slowly moved away from P5/6 college sports. I work at a D2 and enjoy the game more and enjoy more sports than just basketball and football.

There was a time I was seriously into the NBA, but over time, the game changed and now I rarely watch it at all. I say that because I found today I'm in the early stages of repeating that with college basketball. Maybe it's because my team had a tough year, maybe it's because NIL is creating a bunch of mercenaries who do what's best for themselves (much like the NBA) but I just wasn't feeling it today. Didn't watch the selection show and won't be filling in a bracket this week. Maybe I'm totally wrong, and often am. But it's like the college game has decided to de-emphasize what made it great (tradition, players staying for a few years so you could get to know them, an allegiance to a school) and traded it for the things the NBA does that aren't so great. Hopefully for college sports, I'm the only one who feels this way...

@alt_w_v_g I often say if you decide strictly on long term stakeholder value, you often end up at same decision as one who “decided w/heart.” Key is LT value, not short term bubble gains. And deciding on $’s means you don’t make emotional mistakes based on likes/dislikes.

Update: went back to therapy today... Alone this time My wife refused to go Said I "ruined the safe space" I didn't know therapy had a safe space I thought that was the whole room The therapist asked why I came back I said "my wife gave me an ultimatum" She asked how that made me feel I said "motivated. Deadlines create urgency" She wrote something down It did not seem positive She asked me to describe my marriage without using business terms I sat there for 45 seconds I said "it's a long-term... arrangement... between two parties who..." She stopped me I said "I was going to say love" She said "were you?" I was not She asked what I would do if my wife left I said "I ran the numbers" She said "excuse me?" I said I ran a sensitivity analysis Best case: I keep the house Base case: I lose 40-60% of net assets Worst case: she gets the dog She asked if I was serious I was The dog is a golden retriever Non-negotiable She asked if I ever tell my wife how I feel I said "I tell her I appreciate her operational efficiency" She asked what that means I said "she manages the household with minimal supervision" She asked if I hear how that sounds I said "like a compliment?" She closed her notebook She asked if I've ever been vulnerable I said "I cried once" She asked when I said "2019. Excel crashed during a model review. I lost four hours of work" She asked if I've ever cried about a person I thought about it I said "does a managing director count?" She said "in what context?" I said "he killed our deal at the final IC vote" She said "that's grief over a transaction" I said "it was a $540 million transaction" She didn't seem to think that mattered It mattered She asked me to say one thing to my wife Purely emotional No numbers. No frameworks. No ROI. I sat there for a long time I said "she makes the house feel like a place I want to come back to. And I would be less without her." The therapist teared up I said "was that sufficient?" She said "that was beautiful" I said "great. Can I get that in writing for the next session?" $250/hr Quarterly commitment No cancellation clause Sent from my iPhone
Ethan Brooks@alt_w_v_g

Wife made me go to couples therapy last week Nice office Two couches Box of tissues The therapist asked what brings us in My wife said "he treats everything like a transaction" I said "that's not true" The therapist asked me to give an example of something I do that isn't transactional I thought about it for 11 seconds I could not think of an example The therapist asked how that made me feel I said "efficient" My wife looked at the therapist The therapist looked at my wife They had a moment I was not part of the moment My wife said "do you love me?" I said "I chose you. Every day I choose you. That's not emotion. That's a commitment with a compounding return and I don't see a better alternative in the market." The room went quiet My wife cried The therapist cried I didn't understand why That was the most romantic thing I've ever said The therapist said "I think we should meet weekly" I said "what's your hourly rate?" She said "$275" I said "for both of us or each?" My wife picked up her purse and walked out I stayed to negotiate the rate Got it down to $250 Small win Sent from my iPhone

@alt_w_v_g Agree but remember Pareto efficiency. Star players can’t run & block, assist & score. Doing 40% of A work in a group of 4 means you did more than others (you were the star) but didn’t have to do 60% of the work. Hopefully you get promoted and the others stay stable performers.

Had a parent-teacher conference this morning My wife told me not to come I came anyway She said "please just listen and nod" I said "I always listen" She said "you listen like you're sitting in a boardroom looking for something to challenge" That's how listening works Nice classroom Small chairs I am 6'4" and was seated at a desk designed for someone who still believes in Santa Claus My knees touched my chest The teacher introduced herself Shared her identified pronouns I shared my identified adjectives Smart and handsome My wife closed her eyes The teacher had a folder Color-coded tabs I respected the organization She said our son is "a pleasure to have in class" My wife smiled I waited That sentence is never the whole report It's the executive summary before the risk section She said "however" There it is She said he "asks a lot of questions" I said "good" She said "during quiet time" I said "when is quiet time?" She said "it's when students are expected to work independently and in silence" I said "so he's the only one trying to get information and you've structured the environment to prevent it?" My wife put her hand on my arm I continued The teacher said he recently told another student that "sharing pencils doesn't make sense if nobody brings their own" I said "that's an accurate observation" My wife squeezed harder The teacher said she's concerned about his "resistance to group activities" I said "he's not resistant. He just doesn't see the value of doing more work for the same grade." The teacher said he also corrected her math on the whiteboard I said "was he right?" She paused She said "that's not the point" I said "it's a little bit the point" My wife stood up Sat back down Compromise The teacher pulled out an evaluation sheet Categories like "works well with others" and "follows directions" and "respects classroom norms" All subjective Not a number on the page I asked how these are graded She said "based on observation" I said "so one person's opinion with no second review?" She said "it's professional judgment" I said "my auditors say that too. Right before I disagree with them." She looked at my wife My wife said "I'm sorry about him" I said "I'm sitting right here" My wife said "I know" The teacher said overall he's a bright kid and she just wants to make sure he learns to "collaborate" I said "collaboration is important. But so is recognizing when you're the only one doing the work. He'll learn that again in college. And again in the real world. Might as well start now." Nobody spoke The teacher closed her folder She said "I think we've covered everything" I said "one more thing" She braced herself I said "his reading is above grade level. His math is strong. He asks hard questions and corrects mistakes when he sees them. I just want to make sure this school knows what it has." The teacher looked at me differently My wife looked at me differently I said "that's all" We left In the car my wife was quiet Then she said "he's turning into you" I said "is that a good thing?" She didn't answer From the backseat he said "dad, why does the teacher count off for asking questions? Isn't that the whole point of school?" I looked at my wife She looked out the window I said "yes. It is." He said "I don't think she likes when I'm right" I didn't say anything Neither did my wife Small chairs Color-coded tabs No follow-up items But the kid's going to be fine Sent from my iPhone

I'm old school, so I always go with the Winston Million Crown Jewels, plus one. Biggest: Daytona 500 Oldest: Southern 500 Longest: Coca-Cola (World) 600 Fastest: Talladega Spring Race (formerly Winston 500) Plus One: I go back and forth between Brickyard and Bristol Night Race

We consider NASCAR's crown jewels the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600, Brickyard 400, & Southern 500. What would be the 5th? 866-PIT-LANE @SiriusXMNASCAR #TMDNASCAR

@SonsofSatVT Well I grew up in B’burg, so I would go back. But my daughter lives in Miami and graduated from UM, so we already spend a lot of time there; ALTHOUGH Miami does not = Coral Gables. Otherwise? I love Winston-Salem! Triad is so underrated compared to Triangle.

@CfbSelect The one I cheer for that I have the least connection is Wake Forest. My daughter graduated from the UMiami! Although both of those are somewhat odd as I am a true Hokie all the way!

The current football roster has 11 offensive lineman at 310lbs or more. VT has only had double-digit 310lb O-linemen one other time in history. It was the 2020 season where Khalil Herbert broke the school record for yards per carry (1,182 yds on 154 att - 7.7 avg).

@OleTimeHardball Top row is WAY better definsively and way more consistent hitting for average! And not sacrificing too much on power. But more consistent, clutch, and reliable power.

@keithtaylor21 Joe B. Hall went to the Championship the next year and Eddie Sutton got UK on probation. Hall was not the best x/o guy ever, but he was tenacious and a program administrator. It took Hall to transition UK from Rupp to what it has been the last 40 years.

I'm going to tweet this again. Joe B. Hall went 13-13 in his second season and he followed a legend. It was a different time, but same pressure, expectations are the same regardless of the era. Eddie Sutton went 18-11 his second season at UK. Same job, same expectations that have never changed.

@DukeEchoes Come to the UM campus in Coral Gables, do a 360 turn, close your eyes, think for a few seconds, and then think about where you would rather be. A lot of great schools and campuses out there but there is only one UMiami campus and life is pretty fantastic there!

No disrespect to Miami, but give head coach Jai Lucas another year or two, and it won’t be long before he moves on to higher-profile basketball programs. His coaching stock is rising fast, just like it did at Duke, which comes as no surprise. Great win for Miami!
