Tomorrow is #Juneteenth, recognizing the day in history when Union troops in Galveston, TX informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom. Emancipation alone cannot erase the system of anti-Black oppression that slavery formed. The fight for racial equity isn't over.

Even though the United States celebrates July 4 as their independence, people were still enslaved through the end of the Civil War. The official liberation day is recognized as June 19, 1965, when the last enslaved African Americans were informed of their freedom.

It’s been 1 year since the murder of George Floyd. His killing wasn't an isolated incident: last year there were 241 fatal police shootings of Black people in the US. And in this same year, 2x as many Black, Hispanic & Native Americans died of COVID than their white counterparts.

It's been one year since George Floyd's death. We are happy to see @POTUS support our call to restrict excessive force in policing with the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (intro’d by @RepKarenBass) and urge the Senate to pass this vital bill.

"According to Shot in the Head, a report released in September 2020 by Physicians for Human Rights, during the protests between May 26 and July 27 of last year, U.S. law enforcement officials shot 115 people in the head with 'less lethal weapons.'"
Pulitzer Center@pulitzercenter

During the 2020 U.S. protests, at least 30 people suffered permanent ocular damage from being shot in the head by police. Having been partially blinded himself, grantee William Sands set out to find others also blinded by the police for @Narratively. bit.ly/3bL92N5

Powerful keynote and call to action from @ruha9 at @NTENorg #21NTC this morning, confronting racial bias woven into the fabric of today's technology landscape. But we are pattern makers, and we can reweave a more just society. #ntc21 #nptech
