A lot of you called Naira Marley a killer here. Despite the fact that the quack nurse that killed Mohbad was actually arrested, taken to court and jailed. You've kept insisting Naira Marley and Sam Larry are murderers. You're criminals, no?

i don’t even get why y’all are missing the point. what he did was wrong, but the punishment is extreme….you can’t claim to want a better country and celebrate when the law is being misused.

Not being classist or anything But just take a look at the caliber of people actively involved in politics in Nigeria , they are the local people , mostly uneducated, all of them card carrying members with their Voters card. While most of the so called educated and intellectuals in Nigeria are on X and other social media platforms, writing threads and lamenting about Bad governance via tweets and not participating in any form or way in local politics. All these uneducated folks know who their state House of Representatives are, they know who is representing them at the National level both at upper and lower house, many people on X don’t have an idea who their own representatives are. There can be no change untill people realize and understand that the post of the Citizen is the most important one Ina democracy, you have a civic duty as citizens. There has to be much more awareness on citizenship education.

Declaring someone dead is not an offense anyone should go to prison for. The only reasonable response to a declaration of death concerning a living person is to re-declare them alive upon confirming they are not dead In this same Nigeria, I have lost count how many Nollywood actors who have come out to dismiss media reports that they are dead. So when exactly did we start jailing people for it? Btw, how many of you were jailed for declaring Buhari dead while he was till alive? You that’s talking here, I’m sure people have declared you what you are not. How many of them have you jailed? Or you think Adekunle Gold’s emotions are more important than yours. Abeg abeg.

This is the last thing I’ll say on this because I have come to the conclusion that Nigeria is not a country for people who want to think But simply if a politician or richer person defamed you online or cyber bullied you, what are your chances of getting a positive ruling ?

Again, Elewa was right. Look at the conversations on the TL, we absolutely couldn't have come up with fundamental human rights on our own. Black people have an obsession with tyranny.

All of you supporting 2 years jail term over false tweets are mad . It's a punishable offence, but jail term is ridiculous

Nigeria is a society where those whose circumstances closely resemble this guy are celebrating on behalf of the rich people who got him jailed, because they feel much more empathy for rich people than they do for themselves. Everyday I see why colonisation was possible...

Now they are saying the court didn’t jail him for defamation, but for cyber bullying, which is even more ridiculous. Again, you see this cyber bullying trap that you people are boldly walking into, it will go round. You have successfully established that people can spend 2 years in jail for internet posts. You will regret this. I promise you. We will be here. Adekunle Gold is a public figure who had invited the entire public to his private affairs, including his home, marriage and children. There’s no reason on earth anyone should be jailed for making comments about them. Wishing death or declaring death on someone is not a criminal offense. It is not, and can never be. People don’t die because you declare them dead. If it worked that way, Tinubu would have been dead long ago. It is the duty of Adekunle Gold to protect his family from the internet. It is not the duty of the Nigerian judiciary. The Nigerian judiciary does not exist to protect celebrities and their families, it exists to try criminals.

Today, we are once again witnessing the reckless abuse of @policenh powers against social media users in Nigeria. What is even more disturbing is how some Nigerian celebrities now appear more eager than politicians and security agencies to throw largely poor young Nigerians into prison under the guise of “cybercrime,” simply because of internet banter or comments they dislike. I have read reports about singers like @Simi and @AdekunleGold allegedly using the police against critics online, and now similar allegations involving @ayrastarr and others keep surfacing. Meanwhile, these same celebrities sit comfortably among international stars abroad demanding respect and award for creative freedom and artistic expression, yet many of those global celebrities would never (and functioning systems) won’t let them weaponize the police, corrupt prosecutors, or compromised court judges against ordinary citizens over free speech or online commentary. This growing culture of criminalizing speech, jokes, criticism, trolling, and online banter is dangerous to democracy and fundamentally incompatible with freedom of expression. The real shame belongs to the irresponsible Nigeria Police Force @PoliceNG and sections of the justice system that continue enabling these abuses instead of protecting citizens’ rights. The police must stop acting as private enforcers for the rich, connected and powerful. Nigerians cannot continue to be shipped to prison because influential people are offended online. #RevolutionNow
