@SalfordStories @adampayne26 @labour_history I think there’s a case to be made about the wider cultural impact of sports clubs as a posed to normal businesses. When I spoke to civil servants they had the same argument that other sports would ask the same but I wasn’t there to lobby for any other sports 😁
English

@jackyoud90 @adampayne26 @labour_history And the loans to other businesses or sports? How would that ask (for a write off) be limited to RL. It’s difficult but the pro clubs are businesses - separate from community clubs.

For The House mag, I dust off the writing hat to look at a topic close to my heart — rugby league
Years on from Boris Johnson’s Workington Man, the game, rooted in communities, faces existential questions. What can, what should, government do to help?

@SalfordStories @adampayne26 @labour_history Issue is that it’s costing £17m to manage the Covid loans remaining of £16m according to parliamentary accounts committee. So waiving remainder of debt makes sense especially if it’s required to support community clubs / run public health campaigns etc
English

@jackyoud90 @adampayne26 @labour_history Pro Rugby Union clubs that went pop ought to have honoured Covid Loans - agree. Pro Rugby League clubs are paying back loans - it’s right they do - they are businesses & it’s public money. The sport has been horribly impacted by COVID - true - so have thousands of businesses.
English

@SalfordStories @adampayne26 @labour_history Completely agree on public health campaigns. Doesn’t need to be just central gov but local gov can do this too
English

@jackyoud90 @adampayne26 @labour_history In fairness community RL had £Ms investment in grassroots facilities improvements via RLWC2021 (22) - public money. More to do - much of the sport doesn’t own its pitches or clubhouses. Ownership would help. Also, could see central Govt sponsoring public health campaigns via RL
English

@adampayne26 @labour_history The work needs to happen at the top with SL / RFL / Sport England and Gov but if we’re not supporting, building and developing the community game (Gov grant schemes would be welcome!) then we’re missing a huge part of what makes RL special and not building the base 4/4
English

@adampayne26 @labour_history Supporting community clubs with basic challenges (knot weed, fly tipping, etc) when they wouldn’t have asked before. And we’re supporting clubs to bring back the historic Valentine Cup to add that prestige to community RL in Salford. 3/

Salford Labour have been working with @BeeNetwork to secure even more improvements to Salford's bus routes!
🚌 The number 50 will now have night buses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, connecting MediaCity to Didsbury via the City Centre.

#OTD 1900: 129 trade unionists and socialists met in London to establish "a distinct Labour group in Parliament" that would promote legislation in "the direct interests of labour."
The Labour Representation Committee, renamed the Labour Party in 1906, was born.
