@cmitchell231 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I like the point you make here about going farther than understanding our students' emotions/circumstances. Communicating that understanding to them is just as important, if not more important. Teachers should go above and beyond to provide support for the needs of their students

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 Having empathy entails being able to put yourself in the place of others and really just an attempt to understand their experiences/feelings. It's important for teaching, because we should have empathy for our students and be understanding of their personal needs and situations.

@asl_teach @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 That is a great point about unlearning things. We as teachers or people in general, should take the time to self-examine to find the things that we want to change. To be the best teacher possible, we must get rid of the teachings that we've received that may be holding us back.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 One way I plan on taking time to engage in self-reflection about my beliefs, practices, and biases has actually already been something I have been thinking about. That right there, to me is the first step. I want to take time to unlearn things I learned and eliminate them.

Q4: We all have room for growth. How will you “engage in self-reflection about your beliefs, practices, and biases”? @MrsGallardo1 #EDEL5200

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 By constantly examining my beliefs & practices and how they affect my students. I have a greater responsibility to society and will hold myself more accountable for those beliefs/practices. Even as a teacher I will strive to be a life-long students; growing, changing & evolving..

@cmitchell231 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I really like that you emphasize the importance or knowing our students, as well as developing those important extended relationships. I think that this will help us to not only know our students but also know their needs and how to advocate for them.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 We can best advocate for our students by starting with listening to them. Teachers should carve out some time that is devoted to student feedback; through surveys/polls, anonymous comment boxes, etc. Because for teachers to be advocates, they must first know what the issues are.

@missmjung @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Great idea! Providing math activities daily to begin your math time, is a great way to not only encourage students in using numbers flexibly, but also to make math more of a norm. Also, exposing students to math in multiple ways can increase their confidence in math skill.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Some ways I will encourage students to use numbers flexibly is by incorporating daily activities to increase math fluency in the beginning of our math time. Some examples are number talks, “which one doesn’t belong?”, and estimations. This will become routine in the classroom.

@JezminQ @WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Math cards are an excellent idea for an alternative! The idea of visual representation is great for all students, and especially ELs and SpEd students. Utilizing a hands on method, such as math cards, can be far more engaging than timed test and a way to switch things up!

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 An alternative to a timed math test can be having math cards. These are great because it provides a visual representation with area models and steers away from speed. Multiplication fact activities are another option that is focused on understanding and not time.

@Ms_EspinozaMS @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Yes! Showing students multiple ways for problem solving is a great way to supply multiple means of representation of numbers and their relationships; building on the student's understanding.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler A5. One of the many benefits of Number Talks are a great tool to help develop number sense for students and builds problem solving skills. Kids are able to see the multiple ways a problem can be solved, and they can share their perspective with other peers.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler With "number talks," students learn skills in mental math and develop conceptual understanding about numbers and their relationships. "Number talks" also exposes students to the strategies being used by other students. This helps expand on their knowledge and understanding.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler We can encourage students to use numbers flexibly by first removing the emphasis on speed. Additionally, we can use strategies like "number talks," where students are given an abstract problem to solve and then the teacher displays the different ways students solved the problem.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Math anxiety can be caused by placing an emphasis on speed. When speed is a factor in determining fluency, It gives a sense of value to students who are fast in math recall, while making other students, who are not as fast in math recall, feel devalued.

@tom_karnes A2) My favorite memory from school was going to Camp KEEP in 6th grade. Surprisingly 😉, there was no technological component involved and I do not believe there is any kind of technological progress that could change the experience of KEEP. @doctor2pi #csubted #csubedte4200

A2) My favorite project was in 5th grade. We built Missions out of sugar cubes. We didnt use technology. Also we didn't get a field trip to visit one. Internet could've been a useful tool to provide us with more detailed images, virtual tours and videos! #CSUBTED #csubedte4200
