@Jocelyngaribay6 @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I agree Jocelyn, getting to know your students is essential in building a safe place built on trust and respect. Students absolutely see when their teacher is taking time to get to know them, most times, they respond to it instantly..others may take longer. But don't give up.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 First get to know the students and their interests. Build relationships and check on students, this will create a school culture that is inclusive. Students need to feel safe and supported. Create a classroom where students will feel a sense of trust & belonging. #EDEL5200

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I will create a safe and brave space for all students in my classroom by allowing them to express themselves and become comfortable with me. I want my students to be able to trust me and feel comfortable as they enter our environment in the classroom. #EDEL5200

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 Being able to understand what someone is feeling. For children, empathy is something we have to teach them early on because children are so egocentric. We have to take the responsibility upon ourselves to teach them to thing about others and how they feel.

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 One way I plan on taking time to engage in self-reflection about my beliefs, practices, and biases has actually already been something I have been thinking about. That right there, to me is the first step. I want to take time to unlearn things I learned and eliminate them.

Q4: We all have room for growth. How will you “engage in self-reflection about your beliefs, practices, and biases”? @MrsGallardo1 #EDEL5200

@WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 I will begin by always greeting students. I never want them to feel like they are unwanted or unwelcome in my room. Then, I will build from there and continually show them and require them to show respect. I encourage students to never make fun of someone making a mistake.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 We can encourage students to use numbers flexibly by incorporating the CRA model. Students benefit from using manipulatives when problem-solving. Also, I would encourage students to share their thinking strategies when problem-solving so that classmates can learn from each other!

@Yeceniab21 @WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 I agree with you Yecenia, time plays a major factor in increased anxiety over math. I like how you describe how the facts become "blocked" because as a person with math anxiety, that describes how I feel on math tests precisely!

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 The best alternative to timed tests is not to time the students in the test. We as teachers have to guide them how to complete the work correctly so we can teach them to concentrate on accuracy and not focus on the time. Doing this students will alleviate the pressure of anxiety.

@nico_colin @KayCherelleLove @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler I agree with you Nico. I typically have one way to solve any given problem and that's the standard way I was taught when I was in school. Now, as an educator and parent, I'm seeing that there are so many alternatives I want to bring into my classroom to increase my students NS.

@KayCherelleLove @WrightMath314 @MrsGallardo1 @joboaler Students get to see that there is more than one way to solve a problem. As they see the other ways they can decide if it works for them. I usually stick to one way to solve a problem, but after these last 2 weeks in class, seeing other strategies, I found some more easier to use.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Number talks would start students off by thinking about numbers and sharing their ideas. The sharing is so critical because students can experience more than one way of arriving at a solution. Maybe a friend has a faster method, easier path, or even the same way as you.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Alternatives could be math games where students play with numbers by decomposing and composing them. Teaching students how to manipulate numbers to a more familiar term to arrive at a solution more quickly.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Math anxiety can stem from the pressure of having to produce accurate answers in a short amount of time. That constraint in time applies a lot of pressure on the students and can cause a dislike/aversion to math.

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 We can encourage students to work flexibly with numbers by teaching them the fluidity of numbers. We can express different methods of arriving at solutions within our math facts. Spending time, and working with numbers will help students gain better number sense

@WrightMath314 @joboaler @MrsGallardo1 Memorizing math facts is unnecessary and damaging since the way this is achieved is typically through timed testing which ultimately leads to anxiety in students. Speaking from experience, this played a big factor in my test anxiety. Especially that CSET!
