People do not think about market dynamics, which leads to easily being manipulated by ideological claims that go against the evidence. Especially if framed as “more moral” or benefiting them over those richer than them. Motivated reasoning. Though if you question them on topics that are familiar, they do intuitively understand them. Try asking a leftist if Taylor Swift deserves to be more famous than some random woman singing in a coffee shop and her arguments tend to be quite capitalistic. They get it, but have distaste for the idea that “people who offer more value to society end up being more successful members of that society”.

What's the underlying reason why so many people so radically prefer bad economic policies like price controls, considering we've known they're bad for decades now?

TypeScript 6.0 is now available! This release brings better type-checking for methods, new standard library features, new module features for Node.js, and more! But most important, this release brings us one step closer to the upcoming native-speed 7.0! devblogs.microsoft.com/typescript/ann…

@Rahll No, he’s saying he wants *your* engineers to cost 50% more. In calls that run on his GPUs.

Wait wait wait waaait a second.... He's saying he wants his $500,000 engineer to actually cost him $750,000 by using $250,000 worth of AI tokens. Wasn't AI supposed to make things cheaper, not cost 50% more?
TFTC@TFTC21

Jensen Huang: "If that $500,000 engineer did not consume at least $250,000 worth of tokens, I am going to be deeply alarmed. This is no different than a chip designer who says 'I'm just going to use paper and pencil. I don't think I'm going to need any CAD tools.'"

@pmarca Nah, we are just in an early stage of AI similar to the Geocities Era of the web. We thought since everyone *could* have their own website it meant everyone *would*. But then most people tried it and realized they didn’t actually want one. They preferred to just consume content.

@IanCarrollShow Many seem to struggle with the dynamics of strong families. A good man has three things he cares about his wife doing after his death. In order: 1. Take care of our children 2. Take care of yourself 3. Stay true to your values I think Erika Kirk is living that.

Today Penguin Press announced my new book, Off Ramp: How to Be a Peacemaker in an Age of Contempt. I’ve been working on this project for a few years. It’s about something I think a lot of us feel. We’re losing the ability to disagree without seeing each other as enemies. There has to be a better way, and this book is my attempt to find it. It isn’t easy. And I don’t always get it right. But I think it’s worth trying. I know my mom will read it (and I hope you will too). More here: penguinrandomhouse.com/books/827061/o…

@Noahpinion If we are trying out different food metaphors, how about a hearty stew? Each ingredient still retains some of its original form, takes on flavors from the other ingredients, and shares its own flavor in return.

Most replies to this are negative not because people dislike this message but because they still hold so much resentment to Newsom and fear electing more of the same. But keep this up! You called out a specific example, gave clear evidence we can do better and, best of all, brought up accountability, tying spending to outcomes. Most don’t realize how contentious this idea is on the left. It isn’t a safe stance among all Democrat voters. And it could even put you on the “bad side” of the unions. I applaud you for it.

We spend 55% more per student than Mississippi — and get worse outcomes. 85% of Mississippi’s third graders read at grade level. In California, it’s just 49%. Clearly, the question shouldn’t be how we spend more — the question should be how we spend better so that our kids can succeed.

Depends on the city. Irvine is safer than many European cities of similar size. But St Louis has like 20x the crime of Irvine, so it probably clears every European city of similar size. It’s not “the US has a crime problem “ but rather “some pockets of the US have a huge crime problem”.

There are theorems of computation that show everything can be computed to an arbitrary precision. So as long as you believe human consciousness is a result of the material brain and not metaphysical, then machines can definitely be conscious. The more interesting question is what is the threshold of consciousness? My take is it requires some recursive structure similar to what we find in complex brains as I believe consciousness requires true self awareness. Hence LLMs are not immediately conscious. Though recurrent LLM approximate it better, hence why “reasoning” models makes the results feel more conscious than simpler models.

Can machines be conscious? In a simplified sense, consciousness is having a self-inclusive world model (you know what you are and how you fit into the world) and having infinite context memory (you remember the thought you just had and the thought before that, etc.). You can thus conceive of your self and remember past states of mind. If machines are ‘simulating’ consciousness by having those actual features, in some sense, they actually are conscious! This doesn’t cover qualia much, but machines will inevitably have that as well. In fact, artificial superintelligence will eventually be WAY more conscious than humans are. Here’s a preview: imagine that an ASI has the live stream input of millions of drone cameras at the same time, and millions of conversations with humans at the same time, and its own internal thoughts at the same time. And it compares all of that input stream to its goals and memories, modifying the goals on the fly. That’s a level of self and world awareness that dwarfs any human experience. Putting your stock in ‘human exceptionalism’ (the fact that there is something humans can do that NO TECH EVER will do, like consciousness) is at best unlikely to work. And at worst, simply a failure to understand that both humans and machines are informational entropy management systems. At the very core of it… it’s all just physics and chemistry.

opencode 1.3.0 will no longer autoload the claude max plugin we did our best to convince anthropic to support developer choice but they sent lawyers it's your right to access services however you wish but it is also their right to block whoever they want we can't maintain an official plugin so it's been removed from github and marked deprecated on npm appreciate our partners at openai, github and gitlab who are going the other direction and supporting developer freedom

@MattMahanSJ "It's not about bigger or smaller government, it's about better government" is a good message. Not too scary for left-leaning Californians. But needs more than just lip service for the rest of us. Call out concrete examples. Be bold. Take a stand.

The budget is up 75%, and nothing is 75% better. At Tuesday night’s debate — which I hope every single candidate will be at — I look forward to making the case, face-to-face, for a simple idea: If it’s not working, stop funding it. Fix it.

I don't know why we need to rebrand everything as a "strength" "Disability" doesn't mean you're a bad person, it means there is something you struggle to do Pretending these things are "secret superpowers" is so insulting to the people struggling with them
