Most players think they are D1 quality. The truth of the matter is, only 18% of college baseball players play at the D1 level. Today, I want to show you what a D1 pitcher actually looks like. How hard do they throw? How do their pitches move? What are their stats? But remember, you want to go to a school where you are going to play. So, I’ll also show you what the average D1 pitcher looked like that threw 50+ innings in 2023. Let’s begin. The picture below shows you what the average right handed pitcher looks like from a velocity and movement standpoint. Keep in mind, these movement numbers are likely slightly off due to the inconsistency in calibration and systems at each school. MLB average induced vertical break is around 16”. Now lets look at left handed pitchers. There is a slight decrease in velocity, but everything else is roughly the same. Lets move onto the statistics. This chart breaks down the average D1 pitcher and power 5 conference pitcher, as well as pitchers that threw 50 innings or more. Surprise, surprise. Pitchers that threw 50 innings or more had better stats and velocity. While there are always outliers to velocity and stuff, it is important to know how you stack up. Most high school players have a D1 or bust mindset. While it is good to have goals, don't let the division of the school be your main driver. Go somewhere where you are going to be developed and have an opportunity to compete for meaningful innings. I hope this information was helpful and gives you a better idea of what a D1 pitcher looks like. If you enjoyed this post, you'll love my newsletter, The Monday Mound Visit. I give actionable advice every week to 8,000+ coaches and players. Join the fun: pitchingcoachu.com/mmv

.@PBR_Uncommitted ‘23 RHP/LHP Jake Johnson (@JakeJohnson7512; @HeadlandRamsBB) may not have had his A+ stuff against a talented lineup, but still exited with the lead in Game 1. Held 85-87 mph w/ tons of run & worked up to 88 mph with his fastball, mixing hard 77-79 mph slider w/ spin up to 2600 rpm in any count. Lots of sliders in the outing w/ wavering command, but intriguing stuff. Low-80’s southpaw, as well.
