"Dad books" — which this article, and some publishing insiders, use to describe "serious nonfiction" books across biography, current affairs and business and economics — are reportedly in a free fall, with sales declining every year for the last few years “The trend couldn’t be clearer,” said Jonathan Karp, the former chief executive of Simon & Schuster and publisher of the new Simon Six imprint. “When we have internal meetings to talk about this problem, it always comes around to podcasts,” said Jonathan Burnham, president and publisher of the Harper Group at HarperCollins Publishers.

Pictured below is the "Nessmuk Trio". Knife, hatchet, and folding pocket knife. Popularized by outdoorsman and writer George W Sears, his pen name "Nessmuk" became the namesake of this iconic knife. Sears lived an uncommonly adventurous life. A fisherman, a whaleman, world traveler and expert woodsman. At 107 pounds and 5'3", Sears explored the Adirondacks in his sixties with an handmade canoe and whatever he could carry. His book, Woodcraft, was published in 1884 and has remained in print ever since.

@AndrewBeckUSA Another question would be, why is the Atlantic employing Helen Lewis, British journalist, as a staff writer? Couldn't find an American one? Is she an H1B?

Amuses me how desperate The Atlantic is to make this Helen Lewis yawnfest pop off. Maybe another title change? First Title: “The Men Who Don’t Want Women to Vote” Edited Title: “The Men Who Want Women to Be Quiet” Print Title: “The Men Who Fear Women”

@andrewrypel That's a fantastic quote. When I wrote DPD, the fishing was like a backdoor insight to how the country developed.

The falling number of Americans who have caught a mess of bluegill and then fried them up is an existential crisis.

@max_spero_ Meat acquisition through hunting is the most ethical way to procure meat. Those unwilling to get their hands bloody can go vegan or purchase meat of dubious origin.

Can anyone explain to me why we don’t have ethical meat? Surely we can give the farm animal a significantly better life than it would have lived in the wild.

There's a reason why, above a certain latitude, natives and woodsmen all vastly prefer winter to summertime. No bugs, no mud, easy to cross frozen rivers, can carry much more gear, everything is "cleaner" and in a way, simpler. If you had to bushwhack across the Adirondacks, I can tell you for a certain fact you'd rather do it in January than in July. Likely the same is true in places like Northern Quebec, deep woods Maine, and even in the Arctic. The cold is a worthy price to pay -- it means you can glide over frozen bogs and swamps that would be extremely rough, buggy, ultra-slow going in summertime.

@shagbark_hick In the summer, I can only have what i can carry on my back. In the winter, I can pack my sled full and pull it on my skis!

At this time of year: what I read when I want to read about reading about turkey hunting. "The Literature of Turkey Hunting" by Jim Casada. One of the most elegant books I own.
