@paul_jkrause One of my favorite characters in the book is Abbé Faria, an intelligent Italian priest and fellow prisoner. He serves as a mentor to Edmond, educating him and revealing the location of a secret, life-changing treasure. He provides the impetus for Edmond to educate himself.

One of most arresting dialogues in Literature is Edmond Dantes (as count) with Villefort about half way thru The Count of Monte Cristo. Law. Metaphysics. Theology. Philosophy. Being. Freedom. Mortality. Justice. Vengeance. It’s intoxicatingly sublime.

@critterladychgo Yes indeed, Chicago is laid out so logically that it seems, to some of us, that it is easy to find one's way around. For example, I live on Belmont Ave. @3200 North exactly 4 miles North of Madison @0.

I am somewhat "face-blind" & definitely "car-illiterate",
but I understand maps & spatial directions.
I always find it a bit baffling to encounter people
who have lived in this area for decades
& still don't seem to comprehend
the structure of the city!

Many Bergman masterpieces. Sawdust and Tinsel, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Shame—all have haunted me.
Lately, though, I’ve come to see Winter Light as among his very best. I screened it for my students last spring and they were deeply stirred by it. A brilliant work of art.

Achilles’ connection to the sea isn’t talked about enough.
In addition to being an excellent navigator, and being the son of a nymph and favored by Poseidon, in some traditions Achilles was revered as Achilles Pontarches, a protector the Black Sea.

Achilles was a much better navigator than Odysseus. When the Greeks were lost in the Aegean, not knowing where Troy was, he got the information and helped the entire fleet land on the beaches. It didn't take ten years.

There’s a great line in Dante’s Inferno which I think about a lot:

‘You were not made to live as brutes, / But to pursue virtue and knowledge.’
