When an academic says “everything is political” don’t ask what they mean. Just ask what follows from it, and to be specific. That’s when you learn if they really believe it and accept the consequences or if they just want a special carve out to push their own political projects.

I still can't get over how good this is. Conservatives have always stuck with the "It doesn't work" argument against Leftism while pointing to their charts and graphs, hoping people will follow along.
But THIS is the argument to make. 👇Leftism is ugly. It's repulsive. It's disgusting. It's lame. It's immoral. It's boring. It's depressing.
This isn't a fight between two competing economic models, one of which happens to work better. This is a fight between beauty and ugliness. Building and destruction. Thankfulness and resentment. Love and hate. Greatness and cowardice. Good and evil.

I love Wild Strawberries but The Virgin Spring gets the nod as my favorite Bergman film. It chronicles the twilight of paganism as it is eclipsed by Christianity. It is not the smiting of the rapists that secures the triumph of Christianity, but rather it is the repentance of the avenging father that ushers in a new era. This may not have been Bergman's intent as he was deeply conflicted in his views on religion, but I think this is a valid read of the film. The question now is whether Sweden is on the cusp of another shift in eras.

Many Bergman masterpieces. Sawdust and Tinsel, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Shame—all have haunted me.
Lately, though, I’ve come to see Winter Light as among his very best. I screened it for my students last spring and they were deeply stirred by it. A brilliant work of art.

@ArchieG1946 I agree. Winter Light is amazing. The long single shot monologue of Ingrid Thulin is simply astonishing all by itself. Great film.
