Nothing about building that wall to separate people in Cape Town seems morally right to me.

ANC race policies, and its sanctioning of violent crime, have driven out hundreds of thousands of people with precious skills and expertise (ultimately of all races) - the effect of this has been to drive down economic growth and push up black unemployment to close to 50%.
Peter Bruce@Bruceps

@JamesRLorimer @Our_DA I disagree. It's not too hard either to figure out which black people are disadvantaged. A short drive around any part of the country would make it abundantly clear...

FROM THE ARCHIVES: This is how Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Germany's newly appointed Minister of Propaganda and Enlightenment, responded to allegations in the international press that the Jews in his country were being racially persecuted. (25 March 1933)

During the 2024 election, I found myself in a queue at a voting station in Johannesburg. As I waited, I noticed Douglas Gibson walking past me with another elderly person to get to the front of the queue. I thought it was really good of Douglas - retired at age 81 - to take the trouble to come and vote, and I was pleased that he got to go to the front of the queue. But then I saw him walk past me again. And again. I couldn't understand what was going on. I finally struck up a conversation with him and it turned out that he was actually helping OTHER elderly people get to the front of the queue. As I left the voting station, I saw Douglas once more – this time at a Democratic Alliance table, taking names, collecting email addresses and handling all the unglamorous, thankless tasks of grassroots political work. Tireless, dedicated - and absolutely not retired. It struck me that here was a real patriot. A man, in his 80s, selflessly giving his time and energy to further the cause of democracy and the cause of the Democratic Alliance in South Africa. Nothing in it for him. He was here simply to be of service to others. I had the privilege of speaking with Douglas on several occasions. Each time I learned something new. He was both interesting and deeply interested – curious about people, passionate about the country, and always focused on the future. He participated in South African politics in eight different decades. The first four decades were spent resisting the evil of apartheid. The second four decades were spent resisting the excesses of ANC-rule. Few can claim such a long and principled commitment to South African democracy. If ever there were a man who personified the cause of classical liberalism in South Africa, it was Douglas. His life was a testament to the idea that true leadership is not about seeking power or prestige for yourself but rather about serving others, even when the spotlight has moved on. We stand on the shoulders of giants. And Douglas was truly a giant.

My dear friend and great soldier in the democratic cause Douglas Gibson has died. We were in the trenches together since 1986 - some wins, some loses and always on his part principled consistency and endurance and lots of laughs. Go well DG and enjoy eternal rest

David Bullard on News24's despicable campaign againt 'white racists', in this case @twatterbaas. Unfortunately, this kind of intimidation is often successful and the Twatterbaas account has been silent since.

1/2 It may appear shocking to foreigners that South Africa's highest court would effectively greenlight murderous chants like 'kill the Boer' and 'shoot the Boer'. But given that the ConCourt was always a political court - designed by the ANC to sit on top of the existing judiciary - and it was once deliberate ANC policy to incite the "young lions" to go out and attack farmers, perhaps not wholly surprising.

@evefairbanks @AnandWrites That's after he left. US under Bush was one of most reluctant ANC donors. Mandela had asked for $50m I think. Not sure what happened with Clinton though.

@jamesmyburgh @AnandWrites Interesting, didn’t know that. Did people at the time feel that was a game changer? I suppose Musk could dislike USAID for aiding the ANC at all, but that’d rest on the premise that he has a significant/broad interest in SA politics, which doesn’t seem obvious

Enjoy @AnandWrites work, but the idea Musk is killing USAID because USAID helped kill apartheid is silly. The iconic 900-page histories of apartheid & its end have no mentions of USAID. The source Anand quotes saying USAID was vital … is the USAID site the.ink/p/usaid-fought…

"Leila Khaled helped murder my fellow pilgrims" Tony Larroy, a survivor of Lod Airport massacre in Israel in May 1972, has appealed to the ANC not to honour those responsible for the death of his girlfriend by renaming Sandton Drive after the leading PFLP member. The following is an extract of the letter he sent to the Johannesburg city council, in response to these plans: "Leila Khaled is known around the world as a high-ranking member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). Between 1969 and 1972, she played a direct role in planning violent attacks, including hijacking planes like TWA Flight 840 and EI Al Flight 219. During the EI Al hijacking, her hijacking partner, Patrick Argüello, was killed, but thankfully, the passengers survived. While these facts are public knowledge, I want to share what Leila Khaled's actions did to me and my family personally. As I mentioned, l'm a Christian, and on May 30th, 1972, I arrived in Israel on a pilgrimage with a group from Puerto Rico, including my girlfriend, Carmen Crespo. We had traveled so far to walk where Jesus once walked, to see the holy sites we had only read about in the Bible. lt was our first time visiting the Holy Land. When we landed at Lod Airport, we joined other passengers in the arrivals hall. Around 200 people were there - travellers from other flights and people picking up loved ones. Some were at baggage claim. Back then, airports weren't like they are today; there wasn't much security, and no one was checking bags thoroughly. Then, out of nowhere, gunfire erupted. Three men with machine guns were shooting at everyone in sight. They were also throwing grenades. We later found out they had smuggled the weapons in their luggage. I was shot in the leg. lt was terrifying, but I was lucky-the bullet didn't go deep. Pastor Jose Vega-Franqui, who was in our group, only survived because the bullets hit the Bible he was carrying. But my girlfriend, Carmen, wasn't as fortunate. She was standing next to me when she was shot several times, including once in the head. She died instantly. She was only 20 years old." Following a complaint made by parents of 12 falsely accused girls at Pretoria High School for Girls, the Press Ombudsman has instructed the Daily Maverick to publish an apology. Finally, some accountability. This is a major milestone in the battle to defeat #schoolcapture

Daily Maverick must apologise for PHSG misreporting - Press Ombudsman: Publication misrepresented reasons for acquittal of girls on false "racism" charges, despite these being in public domain "3.1.2. The publication points out – quite correctly – that the GDE is the authority responsible for communication about schools in the province. Furthermore, the publication notes that the GDE’s information squared with that provided by some of the black parents and pupils. 3.1.3. Nevertheless, it is unclear why the publication did not also take account of the text of the disciplinary hearing published on the website, Politicsweb, on August 2, which provides details of the charges against the 12 suspended pupils and the reasons for their acquittal.4 3.1.4. In its response to the complainants, the publication merely states that it refrains from using information from other websites due to the risk of repeating inaccuracies. 3.1.5. While this is certainly a valid consideration, it does not explain why the publication did not even attempt to confirm the authenticity of the text published by Politicsweb and, instead, appeared to simply disregard it. 3.1.6. Furthermore, there are indeed instances when a publication refers to information published elsewhere and, when doing so, acknowledges the original source. In fact, Daily Maverick itself followed this convention in its article on August 5 when it published a quotation from the Sowetan newspaper (see point 1.5.2). 3.1.7. Of further concern is that, even if the respondent was unable to obtain the verdict of the disciplinary inquiry or was unaware of the documents published by Politicsweb before it ran its own article on August 5, it failed to publish a follow-up article when additional information subsequently become available on the charges against the pupils and the reasons for their acquittal." To think that silly me at one point thought that James Myburgh and Gareth Onselen opposition to cadre deployment was motivated by principles. Little did I know that if principles can’t go through the eye of the needle you use the wide gate

@NobethaP @GvanOnselen Ramaphosa is on oath stating that the ANC's cadre deployment policy is applied to DG and DDG positions in govt. The ANC's 1998 cadre policy states that cadres must "toe the party line" and drive ANC policy.

DGs are political appointments, made by the president (as Mbeki did) or their appointment delegated to ministers by the president (as Zuma did). Obviously a DA minister (or a minister of any party) must have a say in their DG - they there to implement their policy. Politics 101.
André Coetzee@afcoetzee

I am curious how @Our_DA’s aversion to cadre deployment aligns with a demand to unilaterally appoint DG’s in any Departments they may receive? They are basically saying they want DA “yes men” to run those Departments, yet DGs are not supposed to be political appointments.
