Today Swinney appointed to his cabinet: Gillian Martin, who used to do PR for oil and gas, Hannah Mary Goodlad, formerly of Equinor, and Stephen Flynn, who says he will be the voice of the oil and gas industry in parliament. There might be a theme developing here ...

@MccailColl 2008 didn't register with SNP elites the way it did even with e.g. Ed Miliband. For Salmond, it was a cyclical downturn that could be solved with higher capital spending. But broader Qs regarding regulation, the size of the financial sector etc didn't factor into his response.

Not to add to the Burnham sensationalism, but it’s worth thinking about the last time a Scottish nationalist politician spoke with the language which he has in recent days, re political economy, ownership etc. It’s certainly been a while.

@DougSRobertson Yeah. Although in the 1970s they advocated a certain degree of public control. Now they are just shilling for oil and gas companies.

Forgot to mention that one true source of Scottish Labour strength: Easdale money.

To be clear: at a very basic level, there are better people in Scottish Labour than Sarwar. He's not popular and his record is atrocious. The fact that he's still in post suggests the party is even softer internally than it looks from afar.

Struck by the contrast between Scottish Labour and UK Labour at the minute. The latter, however chaotic, mismanaged etc, at least seems to have a survival instinct. ScotLab is just meekly, terminally carrying on as if nothing happened on 7 May.

@jamiedmaxwell Great stuff, Jamie. Have you spent any time looking at the economic plan for Scotland?

"The SNP has just won a record fifth consecutive term in office and British unionism is in disarray. But look more closely at the party and you will find acute signs of decay." Some belated reflections on the election from me, for Jacobin. jacobin.com/2026/05/scotla…

The Green surge in the Scottish Parliament election was extraordinary, with support for the party hitting a record high of 14% as it became the third-largest force. Many voters see the Greens as a left flank of the independence movement. jacobin.com/2026/05/scotla…

After last week’s election, for the first time since the creation of the Scottish Parliament 27 years ago, it will play host to a sizable contingent of politicians from the extreme right of the political spectrum in the shape of Reform UK. jacobin.com/2026/05/scotla…

Everything is a blood libel. The ICJ ruling, a libel. The ICC warrants, a libel. The UN reports, libel. Amnesty, HRW, B'Tselem, libel. Survivors' testimony, libel. Your own soldiers charged at Sde Teiman, a libel. Chants at protests, libel. The only entity on Earth that never lies, apparently, is the one currently on trial for genocide.
Israel Foreign Ministry@IsraelMFA

Today, the @nytimes chose to publish one of the worst blood libels ever to appear in the modern press. In an unfathomable inversion of reality, and through an endless stream of baseless lies, propagandist Nicholas Kristof turns the victim into the accused. Israel - whose citizens were the victims of the most horrific sexual crimes committed by Hamas on October 7, and whose hostages were later subjected to further sexual abuse - is portrayed as the guilty party. This publication is no coincidence. It is part of a false and well-orchestrated anti-Israel campaign aimed at placing Israel on the UN Secretary-General’s blacklist. Israel will fight these lies with the truth - and the truth will prevail.
