@BIOTIslanders IL is made by states for states. That’s why non-state voices are often unfairly marginalised. Could I ask: if there was a referendum of the Chagossians, which options do you think should be available, and which do you think a majority would vote for?

@jamietrinidad This will never happen with Mauritius sovereign. The Mauritius gov have already stated they will make millions + millions with Chagos with hotels. They have not spoken once of the resettlement of Chagossians. Perhaps the IL should be ammended to protect people, not states.

@fitaters1 No consultation in HK but: (a) most of HK was Chinese sovereign territory leased to UK (cf Gib, ceded to UK; (b) inhabitants aren’t ‘colonists’. In Gib they are ethnically and culturally separate and distinct from UK (and from Spain)

@jamietrinidad Was the return of Hong Kong to China done without asking the people of Hong Kong? If that is the case, it would give the impression that, in this type of agreement, the return of sovereignty can also be done legally without the will of the colonists being a blocking factor.

‘Gibraltar español’ increasingly viewed in 🇪🇸 as silly/unachievable. Would mean subverting 300yr old treaty between imperial powers + trampling over wishes of Gibraltarians (ie population of entire Non-Self-Governing Territory). Very different to Chagos theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

@fitaters1 Legally you could say it’s similar to the ceded part of HK. But more than 90% of HK was subject to a lease which expired in 1997

@jamietrinidad You forget that Jack Straw proposed to hand Gibraltar to Spain, it was also a Labour Government that proposed to hand the Falklands to Argentina and in the same year depopulated the Chagos Archipelago.

@jamietrinidad @Uni_Gib Le puedo contar experiencias no tan positivas, hay andaluces que se han tenido que ir a estudiar a UK, porque no han sido admitidos en Gib. Una persona que trabaja en Europa Point Campus reconoció que no ponían pegas solo a los de la Línea, pero que no querían muchos spaniards.

@sevillelawfirm @Uni_Gib De acuerdo en que se podría hacer más en el ámbito educativo (y cultural, social, etc). Esperemos que en el futuro sea más fácil para los jóvenes andaluces estudiar en Gib y viceversa

@jamietrinidad Estoy de acuerdo profesor que esa expresión es muy minoritaria en 🇪🇸, pero Gib. tiene que tener más visión de futuro, por ejemplo, la @Uni_Gib se tenía que haber instalado en el Campo no en Europa Point. Le hubiera dado más influencia y poder a 🇬🇮. British Education es esencial
