What are the sounds of past generations that we won't hear again?😃
I'll start. That mechanical double-clunk as the librarian stamps your books with the return date and which echoes in the silence ...
@Nigella_Lawson I have all her books but it’s been decades since I’ve read some. I love the analogy in Breathing Lessons about her realising she loved her husband being as if you have all the ingredients for a new recipe already. I love that feeling.
@Nigella_Lawson It was too short - I hadn’t realised because I read it on a kindle and the percentage read was wizzing by too fast. I might do some re- rereading as it’s whetted my appetite.
Anne Tyler’s Three Days in June might take a short afternoon to read, but it takes up so more space in your mind afterwards. But then, Tyler’s particular genius is for capturing the fullness of character and feeling in so few words. And Gail, the character who looms large in this short novel, is wonderfully laconic and bristly, the family dynamic so superbly revealed, with its push-me-pull-you yearning for both connection and detachment. Just relishable. Thank God for the balm of good writing.
I wish there was a safe, vetted way to pair up elderly women in need of in-home assistance with younger women in need of housing. Uni students doing housekeeping/groceries/providing company would do wonders for loneliness, housing, and financial strain.

They smelt of pubs and Wormwood Scrubs
And too many right wing meetings”

I would *love* to hear everyone’s recommendations for references to smell in pop culture (tv, film, art, memes etc). Bonus points if it has an ethical angle, but certainly not essential.
When you collect a particular book, it can take a disproportionate amount of time to decide on which copy to read.
45 and counting....

@theipaper What does she buy at Lidl for 250 a week? I spend a 100 on 4 adults. These rich sob stories are so crass when people need food banks for basics.
Can anyone remember the name of the book about the behind
The scenes stories of films being made that @MarinaHyde had a recommendation on @restisents I can't remember and don't know which episode it was on. An answer would be much appreciated
@parisian_red1 Do they not let any one in with you in French c-sections? Mine was with me for both of mine. Different if it’s general anaesthetic I presume but mine were epidurals .
@webdevMason I married a French. When I had my #2 & 3 it was totally like that. Went to clinic in a taxi alone. His mother is 3 hours away in the train but due to fear of Paris/selfishness she has never come to visit. I needed C-sections both times so husband couldn’t be there anyway.
There are daily posts in my January birth group about not having a single person other than the husband/partner to watch the children while mom goes to the hospital to have the baby. Not one local friend or family member up for that
This is a really terrible state of affairs
@Alison_Edits@JanetEmson One of my kids always expressed disappointment that it didn’t snow at Xmas because he had been conditioned to think it would happen.
Book people - those who haven't fled - do you have any good recommendations for picture books about Christmas that don't show snow? My 3 year old currently believes that Christmas Day will bring snow automatically and every picture book we have does show snowy Christmasses.
