Thinking of the 99th birthday of Walter Josef Stranz (my father in law), born in Weissensee, forced to leave Germany, died in England, professor, town planner and Labour politician. My obit from @guardianobits in the tweet below.

I'm working on a paper right now with an exclamation mark in the title. First time for everything but it just feels right: "Narrative Is Not Enough! Why Poetry Matters for the Moral Life"

I let my brain cells rest in the dark in the hope that will be enough to make another start. I sing to my limbs and stomach, soothing a way to move and digest. Until tomorrow….

Today I am once again putting myself back together. Letting the cells align, the blood flow, the feelings make their way once more to my various organs.

Yesterday: I survived that too. It was like an enormous dredger, raking up every tiny bit of me and all the millions of my sisters.

I am alive. I lived to remember, to have a life, a good life, a family: but I did not forget. Over the years I have come to be able to handle reports in the papers, scenes in TV dramas, words on my timeline.

But I am alive. I was terrified, but I did not fight back. I shut down and everything seemed far away. When, 12 years later the first flashback came I was doubled over. Tears are not enough to cool the anger, though my throat is obstructed and my eyes ache to cry.

Today every cell in my body is screaming. My limbs feel heavy, my eyes struggle to focus, my stomach is a nauseous bubble my head is like a tomb, or an unexploded bomb.

Every week I learn new words… tricked, conned, deceived, groomed, assaulted, raped, but not strangled, burned, buried. So I think myself luckier than some, like Sarah.
