@Ranching4Profit This is one of my favorites, I've read it twice and waiting for it to hopefully come on audio some day to listen to it again. Does an excellent job of explaining the RFP concepts in a readable story.

@Nebraskero Do you move to stockpiled forage or feed hay or something for that week?

Back in the saddle. We had to take the black combine off for a bit for the freeze but we’re back to it.

@NoahTaylor76 I've heard of some folks doing that! Pretty incredible,I guess it probably requires a pretty decent scale

Is there anybody who manages a large scale farm or ranch or any business for that matter from a distance? Not one you can get to in an hour or so and what are your thoughts on that? Does it work? Would you recommend it or not?

I have been to Iowa twice within that last year. I am thoroughly impressed with the LACK of urban sprawl. It's like the state realizes the economic value of their agriculture. Also, anything I should check out in eastern Iowa? I have some time to kill tomorrow.

@MasterRehabber I wish I stayed buying real estate earlier so I would've had more of that debt. Unfortunately most of mine is 6-7%

Right now is it better to pay off debt or pile up cash, or keep buying assets? I know it's not quite that simple and every situation is different, but curious what people are doing out there?

@bl_ag_inc I think I also probably need to just pay down debt rather than save it because if I save cash I'll start wanting to spend it 🤣

@jarluh Anything above 7% I would say pay it off. 5-7% discretionary, I would still say pay it off Under 5% keep it I’m feeling very conservative the next 3-4 years though

Well I know a few people that I could buy 250-500 ewe lambs from a year and I could ramp up pretty quickly. Just didn't know if it was better to do it that way and take on some debt and start cash flowing immediately or start small with no debt and grow from within but then you'd have little cash flow

@jarluh Good luck with buying a grass based thousand head sheep flock suited to the upper tier of eastern US. Might as well stock unicorns. lol

@LyleB86419 That makes sense to me! Does converting cropland to pasture work pretty well financially?

@jarluh I’m buying things that will make me more efficient such as grass seed to convert more farmland to pasture along with fence and water infrastructure. Assets that help you weather the bad times are worth the investment. Then I’ll build up cash reserves. No new truck for any reason

@bronzefozzz Haha I'm not sure I've got the guts to do that. As long as I have a ton of debt it would take a lot for me to put everything I have into speculation on Bitcoin. But I am also willing to accept that I may look back in 5 years and wish that I had.

@GGunthorp Is it better I'm your opinion then to grow from a small flock rather than to just buy and get to an ideal production level right off the bat?

@jarluh Buy smaller number of ewes with cow profits. Less than 100 ewes can be flock of 1000 in less than seven years.

@jarluh Cash is so short right now in so many operations. Hang onto every penny and buy assets off sheriff sales at huge discounts.

@HarmsStephen17 I don't think that's dumb at all, sounds wise to me. So are you transitioning cropland to pasture and cattle production?

@jarluh @CompartDusty Idk man 6% or less is hard to pay off, pretty cheap. It get over 8% than imo gets much more priority to pay off.

@CompartDusty I would agree with that, what about 6-8% debt? Is it different for shorter term vs longer term debt?

@jarluh IMO. The paying off debt part depends on what rate you are borrowing at. If you have some cheaper rates fixed on intermediate or long term debt and can get better returns on the operating side, it would be a benefit to leave those alone and build cash.
