@HEReflections1 Past futures or futures missed?

A few days ago I decided to begin to listen to every episode of In Our Time from the beginning! Listened to 18 episodes so far. They all sound so optimistic and the dialogue feels so less aggressive listening from 2022!

@HEReflections1 ‘Kaleidoscope Research’ - just invented it. (Unless, of course, you know otherwise…..😉)

Been doing a lot of thinking recently about research design and the idea that any methodology only gives us a glimpse of the 'landscape' we're trying to understand; and the more methods we use, the better view we get - whilst accepting we'll never see it in its entirety.

@HEReflections1 Meetings with purpose and stakeholder-defined outcomes, with a focus on vector targets, would be a good way forward: “What is the work…?”

As we move back into more normal working practices in universities we need to ensure that the volume of meetings which have sprung up during remote working are reined back in. Feels as if there are still an unsustainable volume, and they actually get in the way of moving forward

Currently doing some research on research leaders in universities. Streatfield's work on the Paradox of Control is seemingly central to much of what I'm hearing 'Good leaders are able to work within the paradox of being in control and not being in control at the same time.'!

And led to an exploration and reflection with @jarra_CIC about creating curricula which are tangled through with inner development goals. innerdevelopmentgoals.org

Hearing the twisted use of language by Russian diplomats and Putin reminds me of both Trump and Johnson. They all twist the meaning of language, and hide behind obfuscation. It is meant to disorient and deflect.

@HEReflections1 That’s interesting Phil. Everything focussed on the student and there’s no mention on subject-specific delivery. Not a criticism and I’d love to know if you’d draw the same picture today?

@HEReflections1 Nice. Without research that generates leading thought, all of our scholarship becomes a history lesson.

Beginning to draft out some ideas for developing a research community at our university. Find too often that scholarship is seen as a second class activity against research. Hence, using ReSchol as a term to bring both together in thinking about new, emerging systems.

@HEReflections1 My feeling is that it will be both - crippling for some and empowering for others. My question would be do we emerge stronger or wiser and to what purpose.

Wonder to what degree we'll look back at the past couple of years and for many people see it as a period of mental and even physical liminality - and the degree to which such a long period of liminality has been damaging or advantageous??

@HEReflections1 One of the principles of Team Academy - within a team individual strengths and weaknesses are known and roles fluid. Leadership shifts depending on the task in hand and the skills necessary to deliver.

@jarra_CIC And how we structure them - remembering that we might need to regularly shift them in fluid contexts. I think, for example, that universities could do well to see their structures more fluidly!!

@HEReflections1 Yes. And it then depends on which roles are necessary and how we see them.

@jarra_CIC Though they will then need to be fitted into roles??

@HEReflections1 Gartner says, "To build the workforce you'll need post-pandemic, focus less on roles – which group unrelated skills – than on the skills needed to drive the organization's competitive advantage and the workflows that fuel this advantage."

@jarra_CIC Or we work with possibilities as a basis for navigating into the future.
