@GasiorekM @yongfook @yongfook curious to know your thoughts here! should pay gating depend on whether PMF has been reached?
English

@yongfook Do you make a pay gating distinction on pre/post-product market fit products? My view:
Before PMF: Need to find the killer value prop for my target user, want them trying everything out
After PMF: Want them converting against the value prop I'm knowingly delivering

Since this triggered some discussion I'll elaborate:
Free plan is not the same as free trial.
Have a free trial, don't have a free plan.
People will say free plans are good because it lowers barrier to entry and helps with word of mouth distribution.
I disagree. (all of the below applies to B2B SaaS, I have zero opinion on B2C).
- you don't need a free plan to lower barrier to entry, a free trial is sufficient
- what is the point of having a distribution advantage amongst a user base who expects a free product?
- people value free things less
- some might argue that you get more feedback this way. I would argue that it's no point getting feedback from free users, they will tell you what free users want, not what paying customers want.
- the 90% of free users end up degrading the service (via support workload etc) for the 10% of people who are actually paying. That's not fair for your real customers.
- in general as an indie I prefer to "keep things simple and slightly on hard mode". charge a price, try to get customers. If you try to emulate the VC-style mass distribution by offering something for free and then upselling some % of them, I think you're overcomplicating your business. Just charge money.

If you’re an indiehacker and you have a free plan you have drunk the VC kool aid. Charge a price. Free plans don’t work for normal bootstrapped business.
