@dperkinsed @MrLandesman Only if the teacher knows there is a chance of prior knowledge being there amongst students. Otherwise, it’s frustrating when it’s obvious no one knows the new keyword yet the teacher persists with ‘retrieval’.

@Strickomaster Schools rely more and more on goodwill from teachers who ultimately want the best opportunities for their students often at the cost of their own wellbeing. All whilst schools make (forced?) cuts and expect the same level of offering.

Genuinely at rock bottom. I’m currently signed off work and literally every aspect of my life has fallen apart in the last 48 hours. I honestly don’t know how it’ll get better.

@Strickomaster Sadly, I was still in school when the decline began. There has been a small increase for music in last two years. I think languages will still be popular amongst students. The question is where the funding will come from/go to now…

@SciInTheMaking @griswold The fact this needs explaining constantly is 🤦🏻‍♂️ like those who advocate ‘critical thinking’ as a subject. Critical thinking in WHAT?!

@griswold You need both. Skills are domain-specific. For example, a lawyer may have problem solving skills, but that doesn't mean I would let them perform surgery on me, because their skills are specific to law. Specialties exist for a reason.

Trying to teach problem-solving in the absence of knowledge is what is causing the learning gap.

@ianpacemain Paul was my dissertation supervisor! Very sad to see him leave. There was a wide variety of choice in other modules. Decolonisation should exist to broaden and enrich. Tearing down what already exists purely on ideological grounds is unquestionably problematic.
