@stephkorey @andrewchen I’m not sure what “brand marketing” is. Brand, marketing, and advertising are all different. If you don’t build a brand that communicates clearly and stands for something bigger than your product - everything else will be much harder. And riskier.

1/ The Startup Brand Fallacy. Brand marketing is mostly useless for consumer startups. Startups build a great brand by being successful, finding product market fit and scaling traction, etc. But it’s not a real lever. Let’s not mix up correlation with causation!

I quite like this quote from @redantler from a recent @FastCompany magazine. A lot of advertising is lipstick on a pig, a creative veneer that's hamstrung by the brand reality and marketing strategy having been set already.
