@jbouie The first time this was really apparent to me was when I read a biography of John Brown. Like a half of it was just him and his sons bouncing around the country after going bankrupt, settling down, starting a business, only for the economy to crash again.

and generally speaking i think that insofar that the 19th century is part of our public memory we tend to forget the recurring and major economic crises of the entire century

you really cannot understand the collapse of reconstruction without reference to the absolutely catastrophic economic down turn of the 1870s

@charles_gaba Oh for sure, I am in complete agreement with you on that. There are so many great EVs under $55k! I’m just envious of your Niro and regret going with the cheaper Leaf 😝 and wouldn’t want others to go into it without understanding it works best as a second car.

@jbrjake I'm not saying it's ideal for everyone (I settled on a Kia Niro EV myself), but the point is that this $56K business is garbage. There are many excellent EVs available for under $40K and that's just brand new models.

(sigh) one more time: --A brand-new Nissan Leaf costs under $20,000 after the federal tax credit. --You can get a 2017 Chevy Bolt for $22,000 or less (w/a brand-new battery, I should note). --The 2023 Chevy Bolt will start at just $26,600 next year.

Michigan Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow brags that she passed "every single gas station" in her brand new electric vehicle, "and it didn't matter how high [gas] was." The average cost of an electric vehicle is more than $56,000.

@charles_gaba As a Leaf SV owner, I’d be reluctant to recommend it to people who couldn’t afford or did not already own another car. The range and cargo space are impractical for many situations, there are few compatible fast chargers, and they cannot be used often (the batteries overheat).

Obviously not everyone can afford ANY new car (whether ICE or EV) or even a used car, and yes, gas prices are a real issue, but this "EVs cost $56K" talking point is bullshit.

@ggreenwald That UN page you selectively cite also says: “OHCHR believes that the actual figures are considerably higher, as the receipt of information from some locations where intense hostilities have been going on has been delayed and many reports are still pending corroboration.”

To put things in some perspective, the official civilian death toll after the first 6-8 weeks of the US invasion of Iraq was more than 8,000 -- due to "Shock and Awe." The civilian death toll in Ukraine is just over 1,000. It's all hideous, but calls for *WW3* require *sobriety.

In stark contrast to the Twitter experts eager to start WW3 by emotionally demanding that the US go to war with Russia due to horrifying yet context-and-evidence-free photos and videos posted by Ukrainian officials, the NYT commendably applies skepticism: #ukraine-accuses-russian-forces-of-executing-civilians-in-the-town-of-bucha" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">nytimes.com/live/2022/04/0…

Two countries with a McDonalds now in open warfare. In 1996 Thomas Friedman had posited it shouldn't happen: if a place was rich enough to have Big Macs, its people had too much to lose from war. It was archetypal of a time when we thought the End of History was in sight.

We have the sad duty to report the passing of James W. Loewen, the author of multiple books on the distortion of history in the public sphere, and a longtime HNN contributor. We extend our condolences to his family and to those whose lives he touched.

@AlexandraErin I just watched this episode again last night, and was struck by the quiet tragedy of how it ends—that comfort torn away from him—without anyone acknowledging it.

Trying to figure out a good book to read on memory management for stack/heap/pointer stuff. I am learning C++ for game development and this is an area I am less familiar with. I want to make sure I fully understand it.

@udiWertheimer Worse than being bad, it could be good _but_ rely on the sequels in such a way that you have to watch them to really appreciate it.

The unique light and shadow installations of artist Kumi Yamashita are usually made from ordinary, everyday objects – building blocks, thread, nails, paper cutouts, fabric, and wood, which she then manages to turn into sophisticated imagery ow.ly/qkYL50vCVjO

@xenocryptsite When I was little I loved The Real Ghostbusters, which was full of references to Lovecraft and the occult that went over my head. Incidentally, Harlan Ellison was closely connected to that show’s writers.

It is an interesting question, I've wondered how much like, "Scooby-Doo" is for children anymore (or, were children really jonesing for an extended Scooby-Doo horror serial referencing Lovecraft and guest-starring Harlan Ellison).

There was a concerted, multifaceted, well-documented effort to subvert this election, the president was an organizing force, he and much of his party actively participated, and it has caused real damage. The attempts to write all that off are deeply unworthy.

@ArmandoNDK There are two kinds of people following US politics right now: those who have read Foley’s “Preparing for a Disputed Presidential Election: An Exercise in Election Risk Assessment and Management” and those with their heads in the sand.
