@nytimes "they were" should be "it was," @arappeport. You called Arizona an it ("its") earlier in the sentence, so "they were" is not only incorrect but internally inconsistent. Stop making so many typos on my vacation, guys

@drewmckevitt It's not a journal or a book chapter but you may want to check the archives of the San Jose Mercury News. When I worked there, we ran several stories saying that the idea was hatched at a bar in Los Gatos, CA. I think there was more detail but that's the anecdote that I remember.
