Icelandair has reported the incident to the police and aviation authorities after one of his pilot performed an unauthorized low flyover above his hometown of Vestmannaeyjar during a scheduled flight, on the last day of this 40 years of service. The incident happened on April 11, 2026, that involved an Icelandair Boeing Boeing 757-256 aircraft (TF-ISR) from Frankfurt (FRA) to Reykjavik Keflavík (KEF). Some people have asked why I post so much about Spanish history even though I'm not Spanish.
Two main reasons:
1. I've been fascinated by pike and shot warfare, the conquistadors, the age of discovery and similar topics for years. I'm designing games on these topics now. The more I learn the more interesting it gets. And this is the glory days of Spain.
2. As a game designer I've ended up working with a lot of Spanish people. Daniel Iniesta Hernandez - @HndezDaniel, Jose Rivero - @JRiveroDesigner, Antonio Vaquera Garcia, Jose Ramon Faura, Jose Neva - @nevawargames, and others. They're great to work with and really chill.

Rocroi (1643) was one of the most important battles in the whole pike and shot era.
It was the end of Spanish supremacy and specifically the end of thr tercios.
This is one of those classic set-piece field battles that is so rare in military history.
Both sides have roughly even numbers, included disciplined and experienced troops willing to fight nearly to the death, and included combined arms and capable generals.
It was a straight up contest of doctrine and tactics.
The Spanish had a solid system. Tercios were regiments that retained a roughly 1:1 ratio of pikemen to musketeers and fought in dense squares. They had artillery but it was deployed in a single stationary battery.
The French were using Swedish amd Dutch style linear tactics. Higher ratio of musket to pike (about 60 to 40) and long thin lines delivering continuous volleys.
French artillery was mobile and guns could move up to assist infantry regiments with targeted fire.
French cavalry was of excellent quality - able to use caracole tactics with their pistols or charge home with swords like the Swedes.
The key difference was in mobility and flexibility.
The French were able to get around behind the Spanish and hit the tercios from multiple sides.
In the end they effectively destroyed most of the Spanish infantry on the battlefield.
After Rocroi, the tercio system went into decline and Spain (as well as most other European powers) adopted the linear infantry tactics and mobile artillery of the Dutch and Swedes.
It's a real shame, because the tercios look so cool.
