X status: I subscribed Premium+ last year, but X never let me opt out of auto-renew. When they tried to auto-renew I disputed it, X told bank “all transactions final” with an upgrade “pay now” for $1000. Like they never heard me say they won’t recognize my device, support silent.

Haight-Ashbury hippies had a lot of Community Food Stores. Mamdani would benefit from having worked in one before. Even better had he run a corner store. “Free groceries” can work with basics like dried beans, cheese, grain, stuff that’s easy to distribute & store. Learn to cook.

People complain about AI slop, but it’s not much different than corporate slop… layers of overdubbing and tweaks and changes means there’s no ensemble reaction. Music and art are merely recorded as artifacts, but hearing and seeing are experience, new ways of perceiving reality.

Mandarin pronunciation is tricky, but people make Xi Jinping’s name harder than it needs to be. Just say “she” at even upper pitch. Not sheee, not the other fricatives ji chi or qi… just say “she” in a short high even tone. Listen to a native speaker. Don’t over-translate words.

Happy update: xAI X has confirmed to my bank that their broken auto-renew was not my “user error” and that they had de-checklisted me before billing me more. Issue over. Elon’s firms do great things, but his customer conversation is cursory, fails to use AI. Not a balanced group.

Getting MIDI events into Blender is thrilling, but animation needs both keyframes & their curves. Working now on 240-frame loops at 30fps & 120bpm, a drummer’s 16-beat pattern… less an interactive tool, more like a visual drumbox. I see many possibilities, but must keep pushing.

@ReturnOfOlrik @realJeremyCarl China didn’t have “Chinese Food,” but had distinct regional cuisines. These merged with the KMT during WWII into a Chinese cuisine. SF Chinatown is this continent’s oldest. Their chop-suey restaurants were Cantonese/SF hybrids. Oldest surviving was 1912’s Sam Wo, until last year.

Pekin Noodle Parlor, the oldest Chinese restaurant in America (in Butte, MT!) is closing after 115 years. It has been run by the same family for its entire existence. Anyone who wants to move to Butte (a cool town!) and keep it running would be saving a great institution.

Past year it’s gotten easier to turn casual phone video into a 3D Gaussian Splat (like a point cloud where each point influences a soft-edged splat of color). But this doesn’t help archival video, which used a fixed-camera, even pan/crane shots don’t show enough behind-the-scene.

Hometown bands ruled in 1800s and early 1900s… people learned to play from living with other people. Early recording captured a vast range of music developed in relative isolation. (These days everyone learns from recordings, and finding a small set of bandmates.) Listen widely.

Also took another stab at a lap-steel/harmonica/pedal-bass rig, and biomechanics seem better than when I tried a decade ago. Need to add looper, Yamaha Reface Organ, mic… been trying different table combinations, have another on order. Could be good… got to keep working on it.

Been spending time in Blender each day, “where’s the” “what do they call the” “what’s the control-key?” stuff, trying to think of it as a realtime system. Past year has seen improvements in video-to-splat technology… could be a good modern parallel, for historic reconstructions.
