Umm... in THAT scene? I'd give the honors to KoRn - specifically the first 3 albums. That's music I can still go back and listen to and appreciate for its originality, heaviness, and how dark and cool it was. In 2nd place I'd give it to Deftones. KoRn and Deftones pioneered that whole scene, and really transcended it - because they weren't chasing a trend, they WERE the trend.

I mean, why even bother with record companies anymore? That makes zero sense. I'd brainstorm a way to come with a few hundred grand with your bandmates and fund it all yourself. Learn how to record your own music. There's no point in dealing with record companies anymore (in my opinion).

@MNTeeV I didn't realize this was a big issue, but over produced crappy shallow stuff? You have them in your top 5 for Science. What have you written to match it? Not being a jerk here but I think there are some legs to pull.

@betty_egg In all fairness... as a musician trying to get out there you chased the money. You get a loan of x dollars you have to pay back through touring/merch/y amount of albums and are pressured into pushing it out to get on top. Bands have to pay that back. Record companies are dicks.

Again, my theory on 'great debut and sophomore album' is VERY applicable to lots of those bands. Staind being another example: Dysfunction and Break the Cycle were pretty sweet (even though Torment was technically their first album), then they leaned too heavy into what was in demand on the radio and their band died with that scene.

@jeebuscrisis Also I don't know if you know this, but Mushroomed was actually around before Slipknot.

@jeebuscrisis Well Wisconsin Death Trip was certainly a part of it. I listened to ALL that garbage. There was a hardly a rock unturned when it came to finding the next 'nu metal' thing that was out there. Like pretty much all of it.

@betty_egg You failed to mention Slipknot, they took a lot of flack amongst the Mushroomhead bullshit. Soulfly was actually a rebirth of sorts from Sepultura... and when it comes to being a musician you chase money for the debts.

Like I get the point about metal purists because they're obnoxious too, but at the end of the day nu metal is about the equivalent of putting pop-rock candy in your ears most of the time. I think there are a ton of quality bands that had a really good debut and sophomore album (Soulfly, Mudvayne, Taproot, Static X, etc.) - these bands all started out great, THEN they started dipping their toes into some of that 'nu metal' radio rock money, and it either RUINED their band, OR they got out once the fad faded and started doing something else.

@betty_egg Fair enough, so what did you listen to during that time? (If you say wisconsin death trip you're leaning hard against yourself). But, genuinely I'm curious as a musician. That was a hell of a time for music.

I disagree, a lot of it was really bad. It's just cookie cutter pop music with loud agro guitars and really immature messaging and vocals. It was music made for teenagers, and it kinda sucked. SOME was good (KoRn, first few Limb Bizkit albums, first Orgy album), but most of it is extremely obnoxious and I'd put it on my list of least favorite musical genres.

@theliamnissan This album kicks ass and is one of the best alt rock albums I’ve heard out of the 90’s. But people would rather listen to the garbage that came after it. Lmfaooooooooooo

@kev_2012 @theliamnissan Indubitably. "New Skin" was my absolute favorite track. I had that family values CD/that track constantly queued up.

@betty_egg @theliamnissan nu metal is a crossover from jazz/blues/hip hop that led to a plethora of "what kind of metal do u like?" ranging from death/doom/prog, etc. It wasn't "bad" but it hit a nerve with metal "purists" who thought hair metal was the best metal. Ironically clashing with Metallica.

Cheers to our lost military members. The real MVPs. The peeps that stood up for what is right so we can live our lives the way we want and tell the government to fuck off when we want. They died so we didn't have to. Much respect.

@TheePhenomenal1 I quit caffeine in January. Couple weeks ago, not thinking in a fog, I chugged a 120mg caffeine Rockstar. I was lit up but also scared about my heart blowing out my chest. No thank you! If I touch that stuff it's like a sip or two and moving on

@Mongoose_Studio Oof. If they're in your sink drain they're all up around your pipes seeking moisture. I bet you got some mounds around you. The Lil pod traps don't kill the nest. You need the little dot "food" they carry back to the queen.
