Samuel Davies: “the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the great and only remedy for a ruined country — the only effectual preventative of national calamities and desolation, and the only sure cause of a lasting and well established peace.”

The Church of Jesus Christ was founded in AD 33 or so, not the papal Roman church which came together as an institution much later. The Eastern church is actually older than the western church. The church has today and also in ancient times carried on in many places and in many forms. The idea that the Catholic Church of the medieval period always existed back to 33 AD is a myth.

If you are a Protestant who feels the need to deride individual Catholics as members of a Satanic cult who are all going to Hell, know this: many Catholics think YOU are the ones going to Hell. In my journey out of and back to the Roman Catholic Church, I spent YEARS in multiple evangelical "Word Churches," and I promise you that the cults of personality that arise in those churches are every bit as evil and ungodly as anything one sees in the Catholic Church. When you go out of your way to demonize people who belong to the Church founded by Jesus Christ in AD 33, you serve only the purposes of Democrats, who viciously seek to create hatred between Christians as a means to regaining political power. Members of Christian denominations need to respect each other's beliefs, or at least not demonize them, because to do otherwise is to do the bidding of Barack Obama and David Axelrod (who created this crisis of faith intentionally).

@mariashriver He’s just a man. He’s not God, he’s not Jesus. He puts his political opinions out there. It’s fair game to respond just like anyone else who puts their opinions out there.

Communion between Christians and Muslims takes shape under the mantle of Our Lady of Africa. Here, in #Algeria, the maternal love of Lalla Meryem gathers everyone as children, within our rich diversity, in our shared aspiration for dignity, love, justice, and peace. In a world where division and wars sow pain and death, living in unity and peace is a compelling sign. #ApostolicJourney

@joeminocqua Maybe it should be US 2 across the UP and over to Duluth. The rest is the balmy and civilized south.

Time to address the ongoing debate over where the "north" starts. I shaded in areas (largely by municipal boundaries) where significant forest exists. Those who say "Hwy 8" are wrong -- that leaves out Tomahawk and southern Forest County. But in Western Wisconsin Hwy 64 is too far south. If you say "Hwy 29" please delete your account. The correct answer is: Hwy 64 for most of the width of the state, except for far western Wisconsin where Hwy 8 is the approximate border.

Annual post: Bill Raftery is 82 years old… He won only 154 games in his college coaching career… His last season was while Michael Jordan was in high school… He really isn’t a good commentator… Yet, he’s somehow, once again, announcing an NCAA championship game. Unreal!

@vincempls I grew up exactly where highway 8 terminates in the UP of Michigan, yes it is a different world up there. I didn’t realize it until I went south to college and learned what civilization was like.

"One day Gates Brown wasn't in the Tigers starting lineup, so he grabbed two hot dogs from the clubhouse. Manager Mayo Smith told him to pinch hit. He stuffed the hot dogs in his jersey to hide them from his manager. "I always wanted to get a hit every time I went to the plate. This was one time I didn't want to get a hit. I'll be damned if I didn't smack one in the gap and I had to slide into second-head first, no less. I was safe at second with a double. But when I stood up, I had mustard and ketchup and smashed hot dogs and buns all over me. The fielders took one look at me, turned their backs and damned near busted a gut laughing at me. My teammates in the dugout went crazy." Gates Brown was then fined $100 and when Mgr. Smith asked him what he was doing, the hitter came clean: "I said, 'I was hungry. Besides, where else can you eat a hot dog and have the best seat in the house?'" Gates Brown. "I took a little English, a little mathematics, some science, some hubcaps, some wheel covers." Gates Brown when asked what he had majored in back in high school. Signed from the "Mansfield Reformatory" in Ohio by scout Pat Mullin. Location for “The Shawshank Redemption.”

Protestant pastors cannot change doctrine “at a whim.” That’s a naive statement at best. Every church and evangelical ministry has a doctrinal statement, usually quite specific and detailed, connected to the historic Christian faith. They can be fired for substantially deviating from it. If a church or ministry wants to modify a doctrinal point there is usually a fairly elaborate process for this and certainly would not be allowed or approved relative to core and cardinal doctrines. Please do not write things that are not factual, when you have little knowledge of the subject.

When the Pope makes questionable comments, it makes me GRATEFUL to be Catholic. Because the Pope has no authority to unilaterally change Catholic dogma with his pastoral comments. The Pope speaks in two ways, pastorally and rarely, infallibly (called ex Cathedra, which requires a certain set of specific circumstances as the Pope acknowledges, not invents, a doctrinal interpretation). The latter almost never happens. That’s important— His comments today are in his pastoral capacity. He wasn’t speaking ex Cathedra. Catholics aren’t required to agree with his opinions. It’s annoying for sure, I wish the Pope was a wiser leader on matters of politics. But I’m SO grateful to be Catholic because imagine he were the leader of a Prot church—he could change doctrine based on his own faulty opinions at a whim. That’s not the case with Catholicism. Grateful to God for His Church that remains as it always was and always will be despite the turmoil of the world and the sins of man. 🙏🏼

The Senate GOP has exactly two options if it wants to avoid drifting into irrelevance and a stunning loss in November: (1) Keep the filibuster and 60-vote cloture rule fully intact, but stand ready to overcome Senate Democrats’ unprecedented pattern of obstruction by aggressively enforcing the “talking filibuster”—a move that would require senators to work longer, harder hours and take fewer recesses, but lead to more thoughtful, careful deliberation in the legislative process, OR (2) Nuke the filibuster. I strongly prefer the first option. But we must choose either one or the other—because the status quo isn’t working and the resulting inertia isn’t just making it impossible to pursue a coherent agenda; it’s hurting the American people. What’s your preference?

@nickbaumgardner It isn’t just Izzo, lots of coaches don’t like it and it’s not a good system at present. It has also driven out some real fine coaches like Jay Wright and Tony Bennett, the kind of men you want coaching.

@jaysonyork You are entitled to your opinion, but it is jaundiced, non-nuanced, and unhelpful to whoever reads it, as so many have pointed out. I like to encourage believers rather than discourage them with thoughtless comments about an important topic. Best to delete this one.

Unpopular pastoral opinion #17 Most short term missions trips serve little/no benefit to anyone. Occasionally disaster relief or specific evangelistic outreaches are impactful. Most trips are Christian tourism or a form of international youth camp Mostly a waste of time/money

@jaysonyork It was such a bad and thoughtless take on your part that I assumed inexperience so I was wrong about that. Having read your comments I would now suggest it is due to being part of a corrupt missions organization and resulting bitterness.

Every major ministry conference in America is designed around a church model that fewer than 3% of American churches actually represent. The speakers have green rooms. The books on the back table are written by people who speak at the conference. The breakout sessions assume a staff of more than eight. The worship budget they mention in passing is larger than the entire annual budget of the church sitting in the third row taking notes. I’ve been to those conferences. I’ve sat in those rooms. And I’ve watched the pastor next to me quietly do the math and realize: nothing in this building applies to him. He leads 80 people. He preaches and also fixes the HVAC. His “media team” is his daughter on an iPhone 12. God told Samuel: “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” The ministry industry looks at the outward appearance. Big stages. Big numbers. Big budgets. I wonder what it would look like if we built a culture that looked at the heart — of a church, of a pastor, of a neighborhood. That question has been bugging me. Still working on the answer.
