Today’s news at the inquest into Gordon McQueen’s death is a sobering reminder of why this work matters.

It’s desperately sad to read that another former professional footballer has lost their life because of their job.
Their job, playing football.
But not at all surprising.
The fact that #CTE has been recognised as a contributing factor is hugely significant.
Hearing words like ‘ no causal link ‘ coming from the sport is incredibly frustrating, bewildering and upsetting.
Families like mine and the McQueens haven’t needed a scientific study to be persuaded that our husbands and dads died as a result of the repeated heading of footballs, especially when you attend a Coroners Inquest that rules ‘ Industrial Disease’ , because of that very reason.
My thoughts are with Gordon’s family.
More of my thoughts, including the importance of brain donation will be released tomorrow through The Press Association.

My family and I had the most wonderful time at Windsor Castle today for my #MBE Investiture. From driving down The Long Walk, walking through the marvellous rooms within the castle, meeting really friendly staff who literally couldn’t do enough for you right through to to being presented my MBE by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. To have my Mum, Alastair, my son Matt and daughter Taylar with me was very special and a day none of us will ever forget. It probably sounds crazy but I even felt the presence of my lovely Dad. He may not have been with us in body but I felt he was with us, his family. Receiving this Royal Award is an incredible honour and I will always be grateful to all those who have supported us and believed in us along this journey, especially in the early days. I will always be really proud that although dementia robbed my Dad of his life far too soon, it gave us, his family, the strength and the ability to start the discussions around dementia in the game. This, and The Jeff Astle Foundation will be legacy for always. This is for you Dad 💔 @JeffAstleFdn #dementiainfootball #CTE

After the excitement of my investiture it was straight back to work when I visited @AshbyIvanhoe_FC yesterday evening to talk about #concussion, #CTE, the #FIELDSTUDY , the current heading guidance for children and the return to play protocols in the grass roots game. It was great to see so many coaches in attendance from the u7’s team right through to the u18’s. Just like the education sessions I do with professional footballers you could hear a pin drop. Thankyou everyone at @AshbyIvanhoe_FC for making me feel so welcome and for your time and support on this really important issue. @JeffAstleFdn @astle1968
