Ok I’m gonna be real about layoffs for a second and share a POV that I haven’t heard too many people talk about. Disclaimer; most of my career has been in professional services. That’s relevant because this is generally an industry that runs lean, scales up and down and isn’t afraid to cut deep. It’s not for the faint of heart.
When you work long enough in professional services, you spend some time working with the large multinational corporations. Most of these companies make things or are found across all the major sectors: healthcare, CPG, pharma, etc. etc.
So many of these companies are just so big, and often times operating in legacy environments—that in many though not all, it’s commonplace for them to be operating with significant “fat”… duplicative roles, folks whose expiration dates have passed, unprofitable BUs… you name it. There are lots of places for people to hide and some know how to do it.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve witnessed how so many folks who work for these kinds of companies have no idea how much they are sheltered from the kinds of things you’ll see in fields like professional services or even more rough and tumble environments like startups (generally speaking) and only recently, tech.
So… AI is going to be an excuse for these massive companies should they decide to jump on the efficiency bandwagon. It already has been for some. As much as I don’t love how cruel it can feel to be laid off—I can understand and have seen first hand that’s there’s a lot of roles in a lot of companies where it’s very questionable how much value is being created. I think this will be tolerated less now…

“I don’t really like pride. It’s sort of self-serving. It’s never good enough, so you can’t be proud. There’s always something wrong. I’ve got to go on improving it. It’s just knowing that things could be better. I’ve got to make it better, and I’m just driven like that, so I’m never satisfied, and I think satisfaction’s a pretty dangerous thing anyway.”

Vote FOR @elonmusk. The award is only achieved IF he hits exceptionally ambitious market-cap and operational milestones—if he falls short, he gets nothing. If he succeeds, shareholders will win big through unprecedented value creation, and he will earn added voting rights to continue driving @Tesla's long-term vision.

@_Tara_Rohan_ @ixdachicago I would say Microsoft has a long pattern of shutting down programs then starting incarnations when new technologies emerge. In the case of Cortana we now have Copilot. Similar but certainly not the same.

@jeffmau @ixdachicago I saw Shane Landry presenting Cortana’s creation to IxDA Chicago in 2017, with cool slides and a full house! Awesome to see voice design history unfold. Did Microsoft miss a chance with Cortana’s potential?

@shanelandry speaks to a full house of @ixdachicago about creating Cortana. First time most voice design principles shared publicly!

@aprilstarr Can’t say Bauhaus went so far down the optical art path with the vertical lines. Interesting interpretation!
