LOOK UP: This evening, watch Makaliʻi - the constellation Pleiades, or Messier 45 - rise in the east at the exact same time the Sun sets in the west. In Hawaiian culture, this marks the beginning of Makahiki season, an important time of peace, appreciation, and celebration of the Hawaiian New Year. Every sunset after tonight, you’ll see the Makaliʻi star cluster higher and higher above the horizon as Makahiki season continues through late January or February 👉ksbe.edu/article/the-ri… 📸 credit: NASA/ESA/AURA/Caltech

@TrentDupuy I come home to random tropical fruits on my lanai from my neighbors, so it's not all bad here in Hilo ;)

Apparently, I live in an Edinburgh neighborhood where someone politely propped a Mercedes hub cap up against the retaining wall of a private garden. And rent here is ~half of what we paid in Hilo.

@_sublunar_ No one told me to negotiate for a barley allocation when I got hired. Now I feel like I missed an opportunity.

@sciencef1rst There will be a virtual component, and we plan to record talks so that they can be viewed by those who live in less conducive time zones!

Excited for this paper on the progenitor of SN 2023ixf! Jacob and our team used Spitzer and NIR photometry (including some taken less than TWO WEEKS BEFORE EXPLOSION!) to determine a period of the RSG progenitor, which may have been over 17 Msun in size! arxiv.org/abs/2306.08678

Incredible. John Daglas was imaging the Pinwheel Galaxy M101 constantly during nights bracketing the moment light first arrived from #supernova 2023ixf. Read about it in his telegram, where you can access the original timelapse. Can you spot the transient? wis-tns.org/astronotes/ast…

@astro_dan_mil @GeminiObs We also have the data reduced with DRAGONS available for anyone to use. We're getting it all up on the archive very soon, but in the meantime feel free to let me know if you want access to any reduced GMOS spectra or imaging of this object from June 3!

@SquigglyVolcano As long as I don't look out my bedroom window and see lava, I'm happy! Oh the joys of living in the east rift zone region!

S’up! Just popping in quickly to say hi, and that this eruption is contained within the summit, that there is no sign it’ll overflow, that this is the norm for Kīlauea, and there is no sign of a flank eruption at present. In other words: this is essentially safe, and awesome. :)
USGS Volcanoes🌋@USGSVolcanoes

#Kilauea eruption map based on measurements at ~6:00am. Lava erupts as dome fountains (marked in orange) & feeds lava lake in #Halemaumau crater. New lava area (red) is 371 acres (150 hectares). Older islands of cooled lava (yellow) remain exposed. usgs.gov/volcanoes/kila…
